WVN ALERT: Ideas needed on Town Meeting, 375th anniversary
- Dear Wayland Voter,
The free trial of an electronic voting system at Town Meeting drew an enthusiastic response from voters. When Moderator Peter Gossels announced at the second session on April 10 that the trial wouldn't continue into the third day of the meeting, there were groans from the audience.
Members of the Electronic Voting Implementation Subcommittee said that voters who spoke with them almost uniformly said they didn't want to go back to the old system of voice votes and time-consuming head-counting.
Electronic voting won't return unless voters decide at some point in the future how to pay for it.
The Subcommittee and the Town Meeting Advisory Committee welcome comments and suggestions at a post-meeting forum at 7:30 p.m. THURSDAY APRIL 14 at the Town Building. There will be analysis of wireless voting v. voice votes and head counts on April 7, 10 and 11.
On April 7 and 10 there were about eight votes that might have required a standing count of voters. Using wireless equipment takes about one minute per vote, leaving more time for discussion.
Town Meeting voters said they liked the system because it was fast, quiet and private. (A vote taken only to test the system on Sunday found 82% of voters in favor of privacy.)
Some voters have expressed concern that simultaneous use of wireless devices might interfere with medical devices such as pacemakers. The Electronic Voting Subcommittee checked with the manufacturer of the pacemaker used by one concerned voter and was told it was not a problem. One voter used a paper ballot.
