Democrat Ed Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez handily carried Wayland on their way to winning their primaries today. The two will face each other in a special election on June 25 to fill the US Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry.

Wayland's voter turnout was 1,970, 21% of the 9,253 registered voters.

Markey, a longtime US Representative from Malden who represents some local voters, defeated US Rep. Steven Lynch in Wayland 1,291 to 229.

Gomez, a private equity investor making his first try for elective office, received 278 Wayland votes to 102 for Michael J. Sullivan and 67 for Daniel B. Winslow.
