Mars has a livable gravity and atmospheric pressure. All that one requires is oxygen, water and food to survive there. The first two can be obtained by some kind of a power house probably of vast solar arrays. For food, one can look for plants that survive the harshest of winters and plant them there. One would also have to watch out for the winds on Mars. Also, due to thin atmosphere, there could be more radiation reaching the surface.
