      “NW Hiking Weekend” July 16—18, 2010

      Distance: 6 Km, 10 Km, 11 Km, 15 Km, 20 Km, 24 Km

      Credit only is $3.00. Free participants are welcome and must register

      Accommodations: There are several resorts/motels in Sekiu; also Port
      Angeles or Forks.

      Directions: Take Highway 101 west from Port Angeles. Go 5 miles to a
      junction and take Highway 112 approx. 50 miles to Sekiu sign. Van
      Riper’s Resort is on right; parking in front of red building on left.
      Unit #10 is across from store. (NOTE: Start/finish times should allow
      leeway for the drive to and from the trailheads (especially the Hoh
      River Trail which is beyond Forks and approximately 60 miles on paved road.)
      Walk #1: Deer Lake 10 km Rating: 4 Extreme Challenge: Distance,
      Terrain Washington State Challenge: Counties (Clallam)
      Walk #2: Shi-Shi Beach Access Trail 7 km Rating: 2 and 5 Cape
      Flattery Trail 3 Km Rating: 3 Extreme Challenge: Distance, Terrain
      Extreme II Challenge: The Trail: Together these two hikes will combine
      for a 10 Km or 14 Km hike. The Shi-Shi Beach Access Trail is mostly
      flat, but often muddy in spots, with one good viewpoint and a turnaround
      (approx. 6-1/2 Km round trip) at the Olympic Park boundary. A short
      distance from there is the Cape Flattery Trail (approx. 3-1/2 Km round
      trip) to a spectacular viewpoint of Tatoosh Island and lighthouse.
      Miscellaneous: This trail requires a Recreational Use Pass on the Makah
      Reservation.
      Walk #3: Hoh River Trail 11 km or 20 Km (Elevation gain 800’) Rating:
      3 Extreme Challenge: Distance Extreme II Challenge: The Trail: Start
      out with the “Spruce Nature Trail” which is a loop, and then turn onto
      the Hoh River Trail, until you get to a bridge and a beautiful
      waterfall. Shortly after that you will see a Mt. Tom Creek sign (2.9).
      This is the turnaround point for the 11 Km. For the 20 Km, continue
      on this trail until you reach the Happy Four Camp at approx. 10 Km.
      This is turnaround point for the 20 Km walk.
      Walk #4: Cape Alava Loop 10 km, 11 Km or 15 Km Rated 2 The Trail: The
      hiker can take the 11 Km round trip on the Cape Alava trail out to the
      beach and back. The trail is sometimes undulating, and mostly on planks.
      Or take the 10 Km round trip Sand Point trail to the beach and back.
      Or go out on one or the other trail, tie them together with a walk down
      the beach and return by the other trail for a 15 Km hike, creating a
      triangular route. The Trail: The out-and-back trail takes you by Sol
      Duc Falls. Optional: Sol Duc Park and Heart Lake, 24 Km, rated 4+ -
      out-and-back trail takes you on the Sol Duc River trail, passes Appleton
      Pass junction, elevation gain 1,100 feet (16 Km round trip) then gains
      sharply to Heart Lake/Sol Duc Park (24 Km)

      Senior Games Walk - Saturday, July 24, 2010
      Event: Puget Sound Senior Games walk in the south Tumwater area.
      Sponsors and Dates: The Capitol Volkssport Club and Puget Sound Senior
      Games invites EVERYONE, not just seniors, to join them at Tumwater High
      School Stadium on Saturday, July 24.
      AVA Sanction#/Distances: 85774/Y 878. Walkers may chose either a 5K (3.1
      miles) or 10K (6.2 miles) walk.
      Starting Point: Tumwater High School Stadium is located at 700 Israel
      Road SW in Tumwater.
      Driving Directions:
      I-5 Northbound: Exit 101 (Tumwater Blvd). Right on Tumwater Blvd. First
      Left on 11th Ave. SW;. Right on Israel Rd. SW. Immediate Left into the
      parking lot.
      I-5 Southbound: Exit 101 (Tumwater Blvd). Left on Tumwater Blvd. First
      Left on 11th Ave. SW. Right on Israel Rd. SW. Immediate Left into
      parking lot.
      Start/Finish Times: Walkers may begin walking anytime between 9 a.m.
      (after opening ceremonies) and 1 p.m. and must be finished by 4 p.m.
      Facilities/Pets: Restrooms and water will be available at the start and
      finish and at restaurants along the trail. Pets are permitted but NOT in
      buildings. Owners must observe leash and clean up laws.
      Cost: Those walking for American Volkssport Association credit will pay
      $3, but free participants are welcome. All walkers must register, carry,
      and return a start card.
      T-Shirt: A Washington State 2010 Senior Games T-Shirt will be awarded to
      all participants who finish either the 5K or 10K walk.
      Accessibility: The walk is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Bring

          Description: Evergreen Wanderers has received permission to walk
          through the grounds of the former DuPont Explosives Plant. The walk
          passes three historic sites; a cemetery used to bury Native Americans
          and early settlers in the 1830's and 40's, the original Ft. Nisqually
          site, built by Hudson's Bay Co. in 1833 and the Wilkes Observatory,
          where activity on Puget Sound was observed in the 1840s. The 5km trail
          goes as far as the 1833 Ft Nisqually site and returns. It is mostly
          level ground of gravel and sand. 10km trail continues to Wilkes
          Observatory and follows Puget Sound on a bluff above the water with
          views of islands and the Nisqually Delta. This trail is rated 2+ due to
          one short, substantial hill.

              2013 SEABREEZE WALKING FESTIVAL at Ocean Shores, WA, Feb. 16-18! This
              third biennial event, headquartered at the Lions Club, will offer
              volksmarches along the beach, on the bayside, and at Point Damon, a
              former state park. A bike ride around the perimeter of town, with
              distances of 25 K or 30 K, will also be available. Three more walks will
              occur on the North Beaches—Griffiths-Priday State Park, Roosevelt Beach,
              and Moclips. In addition, there are a number of YRE’s available on your
              way to and from the beach.
              THE SATURDAY NIGHT SOCIAL, back by popular demand, will feature a
              scrumptious Italian buffet and BYOB. Dinner details are given on the
              club website at www.capitolvolkssportclub.org Reservations must be
              received by Feb. 1st.
              LODGING. Remember this is Presidents Day Weekend, so make your hotel
              reservations early. The Sands Resort is giving special prices to
              volksmarchers. Details on the club website. You can also go to
              www.oceanshores.org to find lodging.

              bay side of Point Brown at Ocean Shores, with views of Mt. Rainier and
              the Olympics (weather permitting). The 20K walk returns to the start
              point via the beach. The 6K and 11K walks are suitable for strollers or
              wheelchairs, the 20K walk is not.
              Damon Point Walk: 5K or 7K or 10K, rated 1C. This area was formerly part
              of Damon Point State Park, before the ocean took some of it back. Walk
              along the beach and through the marshes of the Point. Please note that
              while portions of this area may have been called Protection Island in
              the past, this is NOT the Protection Island located just west of Port
              Townsend in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. These walks are not suitable for
              strollers or wheelchairs.
              Moclips Walks: 5K or 10K, rated 1C. Walk from Moclips to Pacific Beach
              State Park, through the town of Pacific Beach (10K route only), and back
              to Moclips along the more rugged and rocky North Beach. These walks are
              not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
              Griffiths-Priday State Park Walk: 5K or 10K or 12K, rated 2C. Walk along
              paths through the dunes in Griffiths-Priday State Park, and out to a
              remote beach situated between Conner Creek and the Copalis River. These
              walks are not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
              Roosevelt Beach Walk: 5K or 7K or 10K, rated 2C. Walk below the high
              bluffs at Roosevelt Beach. Climb the stairs up the bluff to the village
              of Seabrook to enjoy the views. These walks are not suitable for
              strollers or wheelchairs. This is a new walk for 2013.
              Point Brown Bike: 25K or 30K, rated 1A. Bike the entire perimeter of the
              Point Brown peninsula, and back up the middle to the start point.

                The Spruce Railroad Year Round Walk 1719, Sanction #100764 is
                temporarily closed due to construction on part of the trail until about
                the end of October.

                The YRE walk and bike in Orting, WA will be closed starting Monday, July
                27 for approximately 3 weeks. The county is working on the levee next
                to the trail and will have heavy equipment working during the daytime.
                Although technically you could walk or ride the trail in the evening,
                the route will be rough and torn up in this section from Orting to the
                Crocker trailhead.

                The NW Tulip Trekkers and the Town of Coupeville invite you to join us
                as we walk through and around the Town of Coupeville on beautiful
                Whidbey Island for an exciting weekend of walking, friendship and fun!
                A multi-event, three-day festival of walks. The three-day festival
                offers four walk routes in the heart of beautiful Ebey's Landing
                National Historical Reserve. Explore Coupeville, Washington's second
                oldest town and the surrounding counytryside. Walks feature historic
                Front Street and the wharf; Victorian homes, farm fields and beaches.
                Fabulous views of Puget Sound and Mountain on every walk.
                Wander the historic seaport town of Coupeville, Washington's second
                oldest town with its Victorian homes and small town stores. Walk through
                Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve with it's rich farm fields,
                prairies and dramatic scenry. Fabulous Puget Sound and Mountain views on
                all walks.
                Three Whidbey Walking Festival events take place within Ebey's Landing
                National Historical Reserve, designated by Congress in 1978 to help
                protect a nationally significant area known for its scenic beauty,
                history, agricultural heritage, and distinctive natural areas. The
                Reserve is the first of its kind in the National Park System, managed
                jointly by a partnership of the National Park Service, Washington State
                Parks, Island County, and the Town of Coupeville.
                We haven’t forgotten the fourth F in Volkswalking—Food! After the
                Mayor's walk on Friday, join us for a free walkers’ meet ‘n’ greet. On
                Saturday walk to Jenne Farm for a free Bratwurst BBQ (while they last)
                and music by the Cranberry Bog Bluegrass Band. Sunday afternoon the
                Coupeville Lions’ have a Native American Style Salmon BBQ ($15) with
                proceeds going to Lions’ community service projects. The Town of
                Coupeville will also sponsor a free concert in the park.
                The Coupeville Chamber of Commerce web page lists an All You Can Eat
                Pancake Breakfast Saturday morning at the Masonic Lodge, 805 N Main
                Street from 8-12 am, so there is an opportunity for even more food!
                Door prizes, trivia contests and other activities are planned for the
                weekend. All registered walkers are eligible. Pre-Registered walkers
                receive special goodie bags and are eligible for special door prizes
                (Largest Group and Farthest Traveled, and random) there will also be
                several randomly selected special prizes for registered walkers. Watch
                for the pre-registration form available on our website (nwtrekkers.org)
                sometime in January.
                Geocache sites on each walk.
                Extend your visit and walk some or all of the six YRE/seasonal walks on
                Whidbey Island (Coupeville - Historic, Deception Pass North, Deception
                Pass South, Fort Casey, Langley, and Oak Harbor. Many more walks are
                available in the surrounding area.

                Pre-Festival Friendship Walk - Join us Thursday, Sept 10, 4 pm for a
                Friendship walk of the Oak Harbor YRE. 5/10 km. Rated 2B. Start
                Location: Walgreen’s 31490 SR 20, Oak Harbor. Beautiful walk on paved
                and gravel trails along the shoreline and through revamped downtown
                area. Views of Mount Baker, North Cascades and sometimes Mount Rainier.
                Several restaurants toward the end of walk to choose from for dinner.
                Friday, September 11
                Coast to Coast Walk - Friday. 5/11 km. Rated 1B. Start 10 am-12:30
                pm. Finish by 3:30 pm. Walk on paved and dirt paths and along country
                roads through Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve to Ebey's
                Landing State Park. Watch for eagles, whales, otters. Views overlook the
                Puget Sound to Port Townsend and the Olympic Mountains. Not suitable for
                strollers or wheelchairs.
                Coupeville Town Walk - Mayors Group Walk. Friday afternoon. 5/10 km
                Rated 2B. Registration Time: 3-4 pm. Group Start: 4 pm. Finish by 7 pm.
                Join Mayor Conard on Friday evening for a special group walk for the
                Coupeville Town Walk. Walk around Coupeville seeing many Victorian homes
                and along Main street to the much photo'd Penn Cove Dock. Views of Mount
                Baker and the Cascade Mountains.
                Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
                Meet 'n' Greet - after the Town Group Walk
                Saturday, September 12
                Coupeville Town Walk. 5/11 km Rated 2B. Start: 8 am-10 am. Finish
                by 1 pm. Walk around Coupeville seeing many Victorian homes and along
                Main street to the much photo'd Penn Cove Dock. Views of Mount Baker and
                the Cascade Mountains.
                Farm Heritage Saturday. 6/10 km Rated 1C. Start: 11 am - 1 pm.
                Finish by 4 pm. Visit our agricultural heritage past and present as you
                walk to Jenne Farm. See historic Jenne Farm and pause for views across
                farmland to the Puget Sound, Cascades and Olympics. Take your time and
                enjoy the BBQ and music by the Cranberry Bog Bluegrass Band while you
                are at the farm. Volkssport USA will be offering one-on-one Nordic
                Walking classes during the BBQ.
                Sunday, September 13
                Penn Cove Sunday Morning. 5/10 km Rated 1A. Start: 8:30 am - Noon.
                Finish by 3 pm. Jump on the bus at the Coupeville Recreation Hall and
                ride it 6.2 or 3.1 miles to the start of this walk which will take you
                all along Penn Cove. Fabulous water and mountain views the entire walk.
                Look for wildlife and the famous Penn Cove Mussel beds. Not suitable for
                strollers or wheelchairs.
                Registration/Start Point for all Festival walks is at the Coupeville
                Recreation Hall 901 NW Alexander Street.
                Driving Directions to Coupeville Recreation Hall: From I-5, Exit 230,
                Hwy 20/Burlington, take State Route 20 west, to Oak Harbor, then
                Coupeville, approx. 40 miles. At Coupeville, turn left onto Main Street.
                Left on Coveland. Go two blocks to Alexander. The Recreation Hall is at
                the corner of Coveland and Alexander on the right. Left on Alexander to
                Parking on right (by Coupeville Library).
