      Night Walks June 12, and September 11, 2006
      Early Evening Walks on Second Mondays in the Spring, Summer and Fall.
      Start Point: Fairview Elementary School, 5815 Ox Road (Rte 123),
      Fairfax Station, VA 22039
      Start Times: Register and start walking between 4:30pm and 6pm. Finish
      by 8:30pm. (After 7:30, go inside the school cafeteria where your IVV
      book(s) will be stamped.)
      Distances/Trails: These evening walks will consist of 10KM trails with
      shorter 5KM options along residential sidewalks and park trails in
      Fairfax, Virginia. This is a new start point so trails will pass through
      new neighborhoods in the Fairfax Station and Burke areas of Fairfax
      County. Trails should be suitable for strollers, though wheelchairs may
      encounter some difficulty. Written instructions and maps will be
      provided for each walk; trails will not be marked.
      Award: These are credit-only events. No awards are available, though
      some B awards from previous NVV events may be available for an
      appropriate fee.
      Fees: There is no charge to participate in these events, though each
      participant must sign the liability waiver and carry a start card. The
      fee for IVV credit only is $3.
      Pre-registration: There is no pre-registration for these events.
      Stipulations: Pets must be under control at all times and must be
      picked up after. Pets are not allowed in the start point. Everyone is
      welcome. Participants may walk, jog, or run. An adult must accompany
      children under 12.

      From I495 via Braddock Road: From the Capital Beltway, take Exit 54A
      (Braddock Road West) towards Fairfax. Continue west on Braddock Road
      (VA-620) for about 6 miles. Soon after you pass entrances to George
      Mason University on your right and a shopping center on your left, turn
      left on Ox Road (VA-123) and head south for about 2.5 miles to Burke
      Centre Parkway. Turn left on Burke Centre Parkway to head east for one
      block. Turn right into the first drive on the right and turn right again
      to head into the parking lot on the north side of the school. The start
      point will be located beside a car in the upper lot to the right.
      From I-66: From I-66, take Exit 55 (Fairfax County Parkway/VA-7100)
      south towards Fairfax. Continue south on the Fairfax County Parkway for
      about 5.2 miles until you reach Burke Centre Parkway. Turn left on Burke
      Centre Parkway and drive east for about 7/10ths mile to Ox Road
      (VA-123). Continue straight across Ox Road and drive for another block.
      Turn right into the first drive on the right and turn right again to
      head into the parking lot on the north side of the school. The start
      point will be located beside a car in the upper lot to the right.

      Tuesday Night Walks in Alexandria, Virginia
      June 20, August 15, and September 19, 2006
      Join us at our monthly meeting following each of these events at 7.
      Refreshments will be served.
      Start Point: Kate Waller Barrett Library, 717 Queen St, Alexandria, VA
      Start Times: Start between 4:30PM and 5:30PM. Finish by 8:30PM. (In
      April and September, bring a flashlight, if you plan to walk after 7:30PM)
      Trail: These evening walks will consist of 10K (6.2 miles) trails with
      shorter 5K (3.1 miles) or 6K (3.8 miles) options along residential
      sidewalks and park trails in central and western Alexandria. Trails will
      explore various neighborhoods, wander beside pleasant streams, and mount
      heights where Union forts protected Washington during the War Between
      the States, The trails are rated 2 and 2+ with moderate hills. Trails
      are mostly on pavement, although short segments will be on natural
      surfaces. Trails should be suitable for strollers, though wheelchairs
      may encounter some difficulty. Written instructions and maps will be
      provided for each walk as trails will not be marked. For more detailed
      information on each month's trail, please check with the contact or
      check the information bar to the right.
      Award: There is no commemorative award for this event. IVV credit
      only is $3.
      Conditions: Each participant is issued a start card which must be
      carried on the walk and presented for validation at each checkpoint.
      Littering along the trails is prohibited. Only those persons with a
      properly validated start card will be eligible for IVV credit. Each
      trail may be completed twice per start card on the same day at no
      additional cost, provided you complete the trail within the stated
      start/finish times. The event will be held rain or shine; call the
      contact in the event of extreme weather conditions. Pets are allowed on
      the trails and must be leashed and cleaned up after. Restrooms, water,
      and candy will be available at the start point, as well as at
      checkpoints on the trail. It is recommended that water be carried in
      case of extreme weather or personal cases of dehydration.
      Directions: From the South or West via I-395: Take Exit 175, Rte 1,
      towards Alexandria. Drive to Queen Street and turn right. Drive on Queen
      Street to N Columbus. The library will be in front of you on the left
      side across Columbus. Turn left onto N Columbus and park in the parking
      lot on your right prior to Princess Street.

        which is on the far side of a large parking lot to your left.
        PARKING:
        Street Parking: You can usually find parking along the streets,
        especially on blocks north and east of the library. Check signs
        carefully to determine how long you can legally park and whether you
        might be in a zone that must be cleared during rush hour.
        Lot Parking: Please note that we have been unable to make arrangements
        to use the parking lot behind the library and the Wachovia Bank on the
        same block. You therefore should not park in that lot. If you choose to
        park in any other lot, you may be subject to ticketing and/or towing.

        Things to do after the walk on Saturday, June 19: Tour the Calvert
        Marine Museum and explore the Chesapeake Bay and experience the ancient
        Miocene environment that existed in this area 8 to 20 million years ago.
        See hundreds of fossils from the famous Calvert Cliffs. A snakefish is
        on exhibit.
        Patuxent River cruise on the Wm. B.Tennison. – Enjoy a leisurely
        relaxing sightseeing cruise as you sail the busy Solomons inner harbor
        and past the U.S. Naval Recreation Center at Point Patience. The
        "buyboat" was built in 1899 at Crab Island and is the only Coast
        Guard-licensed, log hulled vessel. The 1-hour cruise at 2 PM is $7.

        Description: Walk on roadways and trails around the start/finish and
        Hampton Historic site and along roads through the Hampton neighborhoods.
        Tours of the mansion lasting 45 minutes are offered on the hour between
        9 AM and 4 PM. A self-guided tour of the home farm can be taken anytime.
        Slave quarters, the dairy, stables and the granary can be toured between
        the hours of 9:30 AM and 3 PM. Hampton Lane has a lot of traffic which
        can be too fast and reckless. Since there are no sidewalks in this area
        please remember to walk on the left facing traffic and be extremely
        cautious in the presence of traffic.

        right on Hampton Lane. Continue past Hampton Garth, Hampton Historic
        Site, Gypsy Lane West and East. Turn right into Notre Dame Prep. The
        start will be under the main entrance overhang.
