      St. Patrick's Day Walk AT2001/0306
      March 17, 2001
      City, State, Country: Savage, Howard County, MD
      Host Club: Freestate Happy Wanderers (AVA-190)
      Distance and Trail Rating: The trails for this walk will be a series of
      loops off a common stem, forming a shamrock. They will be on a
      combination of natural surface paths and paved streets and sidewalks.
      The common portion, AVA TRail Rating 2, will pass through Sacage Park to
      a central checkpoint. From the checkpoint, walkers will have the choice
      of three additional 5 km loops: one to the Wincopin area, Rated 3; one
      to King's Contrivance, Rated 2; and one through the residential section
      of Savage, Rated 1+. Those walking 5 km will have a choice of either the
      Savage Park trail, Rated 2, or the Savage residential trail, Rated 1+.
      None of the trails are suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
      Start place address: Food Court, New Weave Building, Historic Savage
      Mill, Savage, MD.
      Start times: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
      Event description: There will be a 10 km trail with 5, 15 and 20 km
      options, as described above.
      Award and fees: The award for this event is a three-inch round, glass
      suncatcher, depicting a shamrock, overlayed with a Maryland blue crab,
      the date, and the club's name. The award will cost $6.50 and may be
      purchased without IVV credit. Only 50 awards will be available. Orders
      for additional awards will be taken at the event. A shipping and
      handling charge will be added to the price, for mailing after the event.
      Directions: From I-95, take Exit 38A, Route 32 East, toward Ft. Meade.
      Follow Route 32 for one mile, to U.S. Route 1 South. Exit at Route 1
      South. At end of off ramp, turn RIGHT onto Route 1. At first traffic
      light, turn RIGHT onto Howard Street. Follow Howard Street (it becomes
      Baltimore Street) to the end. Turn LEFT onto Fair Street.
      At Stop sign, turn RIGHT into the Historic Savage Mill parking lot. Park
      in the upper portion of the lot and follow signs to the Start.

      Comments: The Finish will be in the Ram's Head Tavern, also in the
      Savage Mill complex.
      The Savage Mill Year Round Event also may be started from the Mill. It
      crosses the Bollman Truss Bridge, the last remaining bridge of its type,
      goes along the Historic Mill Trail, through nearby neighborhoods, and on
      the Savage Loop Trail. The trail is different from the trails for this
      regular event.
      Information about Freestate's other nearby YREs will be available at the
      Start and Finish.

      WALK FOR FUN- KING FARM DEVELOPMENT- "From Cornfields to Condominiums"

      Start times: Registration begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 11:30 AM, you
      must finish the walk by 2:30 PM
      Event description: See the progress made on the King Farm (latest major
      development in Rockville) The main trail is 10 km and passes the King
      Farm Development and residential areas mostly on sidewalks with very
      slight hills. A 5 km option is available.
      Trails are suitable for use with strollers(unless snow blocks sidewalks)
      but not wheelchairs.
      Award and fees: Walk is free. IVV credit is $2. The "B" award and credit
      is $4. There is no specific award for this event. Bring your IVV credit
      books. Credit books will be for sale at the start/finish point. New
      walker packets will be on sale.
      Directions: From the North: Drive South on I-270 and follow signs to
      Exit 6A and turn towards Rockville on MD 28 (West Montgomery Avenue).
      Stay in left lane, and at traffic signal turn left onto Nelson Street.
      Drive on Nelson Street to Aster Blvd. Turn left on Aster and drive to
      Carnation. Turn left on Carnation Drive to Senior Center (sign gives
      direction).
      From the South: Drive North on I-270 and follow signs for Exit 6A. Turn
      right on MD 28 (West Montgomery Avenue)in the direction of Rockville. Go
      one block on Route 28 in left lane, and at traffic light turn left onto
      Nelson Street. Drive on Nelson Street to Aster Blvd. Turn Left on Aster
      and drive to Carnation. Turn left on Carnation Drive to Senior Center
      (sign gives direction).

      Comments: Refreshments/Necessities: Water and restrooms will be
      available at the Start Point. Water, food and toilets will be available
      at commercial establishments along the route. Hot food and beverages
      will be available.
      Eligibility: This walk is a fun-filled, family event and All are welcome
      to participate but: Everyone must register at the Start Point, sign a
      waiver of liability, carry the card throughout the walk, and turn it in
      at the Finish Point. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by
      an adult throughout the walk.
      Conditions: The event will be held regardless of weather conditions
      unless severe storms, which would make walking outdoors unsafe, cause
      the event sponsors to close the trail. If in doubt, please contact the
