      City / State: Alexandria, VA
Event Name: Alexandria Potomac Green Gambol
      Event Type: Walk
      Event ID: 95405
      Distance - Trail Ratings: 7/10 KM - 1B
Description: Trail Description: This walk will offer volksmarchers an
opportunity to explore a new neighborhood and nearby wetland-oriented
trails on the northern edge of Old Town Alexandria. The 10-KM (6.2-mile)
trail will explore older neighborhoods as well as the new Potomac Green
complex. The trail also will explore the cinder paths and boardwalks on
a nature trail between Potomac Mills and the GW Memorial Parkway, with
interesting views of some wetlands with vegetation in spring bloom. The
shorter 7-KM (4.1-mile) option will include Potomac Green but fewer Old
Town neighborhoods. Both trails are rated 1B, because they are mostly
flat with a majority of the trail on paved surfaces and some parts on
well-groomed natural-surface trails. The trail may be difficult for
wheelchairs but likely will be suitable for strollers. Water and
restrooms will be available at the Start/Finish Point and at scattered
      locations in Old Town Alexandria.

Comments: North Beach was incorporated in 1910. The town was a gambling
mecca for summer visitors from the Washington D.C. area during the
1940s. In the 1960s and 1970s it became a destination for motorcycle
gangs. Revitalization began in the 1980s, and escalated in the 1990s.
Tropical Storm Isabel destroyed many of the waterfront homes and
boardwalk in 2003. Since then, the waterfront of North Beach has been
rebuilt with multi-story homes and a condominium. North Beach currently
has no gambling venues, other than MD Lottery sales, although many
establishments in Chesapeake Beach offer games that exploit loopholes in
the current laws to make playing profitable for patrons. The legalizing
of slot machines at some horse racing tracks passed in a statewide
      referendum in Nov. 2008.
