Savannah Is Ready For "Kicks in 2006!"

There is still time to make your plans, but you'll need to hurry! On January
20-22, the Happy Wanderers are hosting their popular biennial event in
Savannah, Georgia, and are presenting eight walks, 1 bike, and 1 swim for
      your Volkssporting pleasure.

You can still reserve a room at the official event hotels. There's room at
the Comfort Suites Historic District, (912) 629-2001 and the Hilton Garden
Hotel, (877) 245-8854. Ask for the Happy Wanderers Special Event Rate.

Pre-registration forms will be accepted as long as they are post-dated no
later than January 6. Please write your name and address on the registration
form somewhere, since no lines are specifically provided for it. A Special
Savings Coupon Book is guaranteed to everyone who pre-registers. It will
contain coupons from restaurants, shops and hotels worth a saving of a few
hundred dollars if they are all used.

The Registration and Event Headquarters will be in the spacious Grand
Ballroom, on the second floor of the Doubletree Hotel, 411 W. Bay St. The
entire second floor of the Doubletree Hotel is reserved solely for the
volkssport event. The Event Headquarters will be extremely walker-friendly
and a great place to come and go between events.

The 8 walk events and the 300 meter in-door swim will be available all three
days. Six of the walks will be in Savannah, 1 in Ardsley Park, and 1 at
Tybee Island. The routes are moderately easy walks, mainly on city
sidewalks. The walk on Tybee Island is partially on sandy beach. The town
walks are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, with difficulty, due to
the cobblestones at the riverfront area. Special walk classifications will
include College Campus, American Revolution, U.S. Presidents, and

The 25KM bike, on the Ft. Pulaski "Rails To Trails", will be available
Friday and Saturday. Up to 50 rental bikes (from Pack Rat Bicycles) will be
available by reservation only. The 300 Meter Swim will be available at the
      Garden Inn Hotel.

Early birds can save time by arriving Thursday evening, January 19, between
6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and signing in for all events of their choice at one time.
The cost per event is $3 for all participants, credit and non-credit. The
A-Award is an antique-gold finish pin showing the famous Florence Martus and
her collie waving at the S.S. Savannah. The cost is $8 and includes credit.
Walkers must complete one event to receive the pin. Savannah t-shirts and
      sweatshirts will also be available.

Walkers are invited to the "Meet 'N Greet" Friday evening, 5:30 to 9:00
p.m., January 20, at The Mighty Eighth Air force Museum. Experience the
story of American air power and personal accounts of courage and patriotism
from WWII to the present. As you wander through the Rotunda, the Chatham
Arms Pub, the Museum and Memorial Gardens, you can meet and greet new and
renewing Volkssport friends. The cost is $28 and includes a wonderful array
of hors d'oeurves, admission to the Museum, taxes and gratuities. A cash bar
will be available. Also, bus transportation is offered for $10 (and strongly

Then on Saturday evening, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. January 21, you can board an old
fashioned Savannah Riverboat to enjoy a friendly "happy hour" (cash bar)
followed by a dinner cruise on the Savannah River. Enjoy the music of a
Southern jazz band as you heap your plate with goodies from a giant buffet.
The cost is $47 and includes the cruise, the entertainment, all you can eat
buffet, taxes and gratuities. The boat dock is only a short walk from all
      the event hotels.
