      Saint David's Society of Pittsburgh
Do you enjoy sharing your Etifeddiaeth Gymreig (Welsh heritage)?  We have been blessed with many opportunities to do so, especially through the medium of the new Welsh Room at University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning.  Our neighbors around the area are learning that Cymru is a nation with it's own distinctive character, and that the Saint David's Society of Pittsburgh is here to keep Western Pennsylvanians connected to that Hen Wlad fy Nhadau (Ancient Land of my Fathers).
We have had the pleasure of interacting with our area's other ethnic organizations at such vibrant events as Nationality Rooms Open House, Pittsburgh Folk Festival, Saint Patrick's Parade and Tartan Day.  Now that the Welsh Room is open, and more people know about us than ever, our organization is receiving invitations to more and more multicultural events.  There are two such events coming up, and you are invited to come and share your love of Wales.
The first one is the Collegiate YMCA's 5th Annual International Festival on Thursday, July 24, 2008.  About 200 campers between the ages of 9 and 12 will visit a Global Village in the Assembly Room of University of Pittsburgh's William Pitt Student Union, and we will have bwrdd Gymreig (a Welsh table) there.  We will set up at 10:30 AM, and pack up at 1:45 PM.  This is where we had our Saturday dinner on the eve of the Dedication of the Welsh Room.
The second one is Monroeville EthnicFest on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Monroeville Community Park (West) from 2 PM to 6 PM.  This is a brand new event at a newly built, beautiful amphitheatre at 2399 Tilbrook Road.  We will have a Welsh table there under a tent.
If you would like to be at either or both of these, or if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please contact me at 412-621-5276 or at trobtwill@...

Invitation – Welsh Independence Day Event – Wednesday 9 July 2008
The Welsh North American Business Chamber was set up to develop and support organisations wishing to trade in Wales and North America . You will have heard the success story of Amazon providing much needed employment in Swansea and, with the Ryder Cup coming to Wales in 2010, there’s a lot of interest in how Wales can take advantage of and develop business opportunities and relationships.
The Directors are keen to meet with current and future members of WNABC. We are therefore hosting an informal Drinks & Canapes evening and would be delighted if you could join us to celebrate Independence Day in style:-
      Date/time: Wednesday 9 July 6.30 to 8.30pm
Venue: The Parkhouse Club, William Burgess House, Cardiff .
      For directions please visit: www.parkhouseclub.com
The Group currently has a thriving membership of over 150 companies. These have access to the movers and shakers in Wales involved in companies trading with the US and they can gain direct contact with the WNABC Board in the US . We look forward to introducing you to some of them, sharing with you how you might benefit and our plans for the future.
Attendance is by invitation only and we would be most grateful if you could email caroline@... to reserve your place. If you have any queries please call 02920 899201 or 07866 889497.
We look forward to meeting you.
      Yours sincerely,
      Director General

      Picton surname from Wales
On 2nd/3rd August 2008 at Hiawatha, Kansas, there will be a reunion of anyone who has an interest in the Picton surname from Wales.
In 1870 Stephen and Eliza Picton emigrated from St. Clears, Carmarthenshire to Hiawatha, Kansas, with their growing family.  Reunions of their descendants have been held locally at Hiawatha for over 70 years.
But this year it goes global.  The use of the latest DNA techniques on the Y-chromosome has shown that all Pictons from Wales are almost certainly all related - and share a common ancestor.  Thus they are related to Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815), the only Welshman buried in St. Pauls Cathedral, London.

      Sydney Welsh Choir
The Sydney Welsh Choir was the only choir presented with an award by the NSW State Government at the recent award ceremony held to launch Seniors Week.  The award, presented in the Angel Place Recital Hall, was given in recognition of the vast number of concerts staged by the choir over decades to raise money for charities and to provide entertainment for the general public and especially for senior citizens. Every year, the choir helps to raise funds for such charities as Legacy, the Cancer Council and the Red Cross, and service groups such as Rotary.  Many of its concerts are held in retirement villages and in churches where the audiences tend to be drawn from their elderly congregations.  Even on its overseas tours, the choir has continued to provide help where it is needed.  Eighteen months ago, on the last full day of its European tour, the choir performed in Lancing College Chapel to raise $23,000 for a local hospice. Details of the choir’s
history and activities can be found on www.swc.org.au – take a look!

Welsh recipe of the week! Any recipes your proud of please let us know and we will share it with the Welsh World!!!!
Big Thanks to Owen Jones from Barry, Vale of Glamorgan for the below recipe!

Pastai Nos Priodas (Wedding Night Pasty).
Traditionally made with hot water crust and boiled diced mutton, this pasty would be served at wedding breakfasts in the Gower Peninsular. Each guest bought a slice and the money raised went towards helping the bride and groom set up their new home.
12 ozs prepared shortcrust pastry       8 ozs cooked lamb, diced
1 large onion, peeled and finely chopped     Pinch of dry mustard
Salt and white pepper A little lamb stock
      A little milk to glaze
1 heaped dessertspoonful fresh chopped herbs (parsley, mint, thyme, etc. mixed)
Set oven to 350°F or Mark 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface, divide in half and use one half to line a greased 8-9 inch, deep pie plate. Mix together the lamb, onion, herbs and seasoning, spoon on to the pastry and spread out. Sprinkle over sufficient stock to moisten. Cover with the remaining pastry, sealing the edges well and trimming neatly. Make a small steam hole in the centre and decorate with pastry leaves from the trimmings. Brush with a little milk and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden. Serve hot or cold with vegetables. Serves 4.to 6.

We will be visiting Niagara Falls and Philadelphia during September and October of this year - arriving in Philadelphia on Friday 26 September and leaving Friday 3 October 2008.  We have a concert arranged at the Quaker Meeting House, Arch Street, Philadelphia on Saturday 27 September and would like another venue on Sunday or Monday if at all possible. This would allow us a few days for sightseeing.  We are also trying to obtain two harps for each of our venues (as well as the usual requirement for Piano accompaniment) as we have two harpists of International reknown travelling with us.  We would be most grateful for any help we may receive from anyone who can provide us with our requests.  We already have concerts in Niagara Falls and in Niagara on the Lake during our tour.
Would anyone who can help with the harps please contact Jennifer Jones-Doolan on JJHarp32@... or contact me on dbjones53@...
