I live in Southern California, in Long Beach.
I tried to do my own self-study for Welsh, but it's a hard language.
I live close to Cal State Long Beach.
If you hear of anything, please let me know.
Why aren't there any Welsh in California?

      Canada/Llechwedd, Llanwddyn
I always receiving the weekly updates of Welsh news from you. I am writing from Canada and wonder if anybody has info re Deacons of the C.M. Church at Corris. Apparently a William Richard was one as was his son Richard Williams,  in the C.M. Church, Charing-cross, London. William Richard was born circa 1794 and was a Slate Quarryman. He died June 21, 1861 at Rehoboth Talyllyn. His wife Mary (Ellis) died Aug. 18, 1848. There is a possibility that William was a brother/cousin to my gggrandfather Evan Richards who was born abt. 1798 at Llanymawddwy, died June 28, 1890 at Llechwedd, Llanwddyn. The family lived at Ty Mawr, Llanwddyn for many years.
If this query could be posted in an edition, it would be greatly appreciated.

Ages ago, I heard a cerdd dant piece at the Eisteddfod, and they were singing a translation of Shakespeare's Sonnet 116. I'd really like a copy of the translated copy, and despite having searched high and low online, I can't find it.would anyone know where I might get a copy?

I own a mother and baby retailer called Bumps to Babes. In the course of our dealings with one of our book suppliers from UK I have inadvertently come into possession of over 400 children's books in Welsh Language ( 36 pcs x 12 different titles). They are suitable for 2- 8 year olds.
I wonder if I could make them available to St David's Society members at 60% discount to normal RRP ( i.e. at my cost) and if you have a library or some other similar place where they could be sold from? Alternatively if you have an  EMailing list we could put  together an EFlyer to get the message out to come and buy these books from us at our main store in Ap Lei Chau.
Sorry to bother you with this and hope you can help?
      Kind Regards

I am a presenter and producer on BBC Radio Wales and
early next month I will be in Liverpool hoping to record a programme for the
BBC Radio Wales programme Look Up You Genes which aims to tell family
history stories,  as well as help people research their family trees.  In
late June BBC Radio Wales is running a series of programmes celebraging the
links between Wales and the city . I am very keen to find any people in
Liverpool with Welsh connections - they may have an intersting story to tell
about how their family came to Liverpool or be stuck in tracing their Welsh
roots - if so my co presenter Cat Whiteaway who is a genealogist may be able
to help . If anyone reading this is interested in contacting me  you can
drop me an e mail at charlotte.evans@... or my office number is 02920
323 232 and I\'m at that number from Monday June 2nd . The Genes team will
be in Liverpool on June 10 th - hope this may be of some interest - I\'ll be
quite happy to chat to anyone who thinks they may be interested in
      conbributing .
      Many thanks

      The Benefits of Bad Weather.
A 'Bank' holiday weekend in the U.K. includes a Public Holiday. This last of the early season 'Bank Holidays' (Public Holiday) occurred last Monday therefore included the Saturday and Sunday.
On SATURDAY I was in the Brecon Beacons on the 'railway'. The weather was delightful. Actually obtained a little suntan! Gentle, summer breeze, bright sun, a lovely day.  SUNDAY I was in the Brecon Beacons again. Cold, (actually wore gloves) relentless rain, strong blustery winds, heavy clouds, absolutely awful.  MONDAY was the same. (On Shell Island on the Cardigan Bay, tents blown away, caravans overturned).
There is a benefit from our unbelieveable weather patterns in Wales. GREEN and WATER.  Driving down the back lanes yesterday from Builth Wells to Cardiff (i.e. via Erwood, Glasbury, Llangorse, Talybont, Pontsticill) the sun was out and the meadows, woods, fields etc., were the brightest and most verdant green I have ever seen.  The waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons were at their most spectacular thundering down the mountains. Another thing, the Weather Forecasters were 'spot on' so we know what to expect.  So if we have been having torrential rain for days, then it brightens up, head for the hills! It's the place to be.

Petition to introduce a Welsh honours system
I have started an e-petition which is asking the National Assembly for Wales to establish a Welsh honours system and having established such a system then honour the writer Jan Morris.  As Jan has written so thoughtfully the Welsh influence in the USA and has had a very successful writing career in the US, I was hoping you would consider giving the e-petition your support and publicising it in your Wales and the World newsletters.  You do not have to be resident in Wales to sign it. As there is already cross party support for the idea of a Welsh honours system it would be fitting if the first recipient was Jan who has promoted such an inclusive approach to Welsh identity.    Full details of the e-petition can be found at the following website: https://www.assemblywales.org/gethome/e-petitions/p-03-134  If you wish to sign the e-petition you can do so at the following link:
The e-petition can be signed at any time until 23 June 2008.  Thank you for giving this your consideration.

      Picton surname from Wales
On 2nd/3rd August 2008 at Hiawatha, Kansas, there will be a reunion of anyone who has an interest in the Picton surname from Wales.
In 1870 Stephen and Eliza Picton emigrated from St. Clears, Carmarthenshire to Hiawatha, Kansas, with their growing family.  Reunions of their descendants have been held locally at Hiawatha for over 70 years.
But this year it goes global.  The use of the latest DNA techniques on the Y-chromosome has shown that all Pictons from Wales are almost certainly all related - and share a common ancestor.  Thus they are related to Sir Thomas Picton (1758-1815), the only Welshman buried in St. Pauls Cathedral, London.

I shall be visiting Montreal, Boston, Ithacia. Pittsburgh & New York this summer, not sure of exact dates yet, but would love to make contact with Welsh groups while there. Perhaps some would like me to tell them of my life, as a writer, the tiny village of Myddfai in the Brecon Beacons National Park? It is stunningly beautiful here, where The Prince of Wales has recently bought a new home.
My book The Ice Journey, a dual language Welsh/English book written for adults and children and suitable for people learning Welsh, asks the question - were the first Native American's from Europe?

      Sydney Welsh Choir
The Sydney Welsh Choir was the only choir presented with an award by the NSW State Government at the recent award ceremony held to launch Seniors Week.  The award, presented in the Angel Place Recital Hall, was given in recognition of the vast number of concerts staged by the choir over decades to raise money for charities and to provide entertainment for the general public and especially for senior citizens. Every year, the choir helps to raise funds for such charities as Legacy, the Cancer Council and the Red Cross, and service groups such as Rotary.  Many of its concerts are held in retirement villages and in churches where the audiences tend to be drawn from their elderly congregations.  Even on its overseas tours, the choir has continued to provide help where it is needed.  Eighteen months ago, on the last full day of its European tour, the choir performed in Lancing College Chapel to raise $23,000 for a local hospice. Details of the choir’s history and activities can be found on www.swc.org.au – take a look!

1988-2008 CRICCIETH COMES OF AGE! The first Gwyl Criccieth Festival was held back in 1988, when performers included Dennis O'Neill and a young, unknown singer from Pant Glas (just up the road) who was being very well-received locally. His name? Bryn Terfel... And the rest (as they say) is history! Bryn is now a world class international celeb who stages his own Faenol Festival, as well as being a Patron of Gwyl Criccieth Festival, which is held in June each year.
Do make a date and come along to join in our 21st anniversary in Criccieth!PLEASE check out the Criccieth Festival 2008 programme:

Welsh recipe of the week! Any recipes your proud of please let us know and we will share it with the Welsh World!!!!
      Brecon Light Cakes
      Ingredients   Method
      4 oz self-raising flour
      1/2 teaspoon salt
      2 oz caster sugar
      2 eggs
      2 tablespoons orange juice
      2-3 tablespoons milk
      1 oz margarine for frying
      1 oz soft brown sugar

Beat the eggs together with half the orange juice.
Sift the flour and the salt into a mixing bowl and add the caster sugar.
Add the egg mixture, stirring well. Beat in milk to produce a fairly thin batter.
Melt the margarine in a heavy frying pan. When it begins to sizzle, drop in tablespoons of the mixture, allowing room to spread ( 2 - 3 inches). Cook on each side until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper. Serve sprinkled with brown sugar and orange juice.

      Llandybie Male Voice Choir
We will be visiting Niagara Falls and Philadelphia during September and October of this year - arriving in Philadelphia on Friday 26 September and leaving Friday 3 October 2008.  We have a concert arranged at the Quaker Meeting House, Arch Street, Philadelphia on Saturday 27 September and would like another venue on Sunday or Monday if at all possible. This would allow us a few days for sightseeing.  We are also trying to obtain two harps for each of our venues (as well as the usual requirement for Piano accompaniment) as we have two harpists of International reknown travelling with us.  We would be most grateful for any help we may receive from anyone who can provide us with our requests.  We already have concerts in Niagara Falls and in Niagara on the Lake during our tour.
Would anyone who can help with the harps please contact Jennifer Jones-Doolan on JJHarp32@... or contact me on dbjones53@...
