I have already violated the license agreement as I have it installed on a notebook, @ work, and my main desktop at home. But then I am the only user and never use both computers at the same time and could never see using VCadd at the same time on 2 different computers, YMMV.
        Oh and I don't care.

I have yet to be able to duplicate myself. But... the third attempt
doesn't take, so it got me wondering if the U.A. allowed one, two or
multiple computers / users. So hmmmm. I also assume it is phoning home
to check the number of installations, which I am never a fan of programs
phoning home unless the ask politely.

                    File preview:
I don't fully remember, this was dealt with last a long time ago. But,
for those of you who leave your computers on a long while between
restarts, it may be that you have to re-boot the computer to get the
Open File (view-set=Thumbnails) dialog to show the preview, after you
have checked the 'Show Preview' box on the last file save. Without
rebooting, I just saved a VCad file with S-P checked, and tried opening
Windows Explorer to viewed that directory (view setting=Thumbnails) and
the preview image does _not_ show (this, without reboot). If you feel
like restarting you _may_ find a preview image in your directory, if
this is the preview you are looking for. I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                    checked.

I had shut off previews on my previous system because it slowed things down
so much. This discussion prompted me to see how it behaves under Win7 and on
a more powerful machine. In VC6 I went to the File>Open screen and checked
off the "Show Preview" option then issued the Environment Save (EN )
                      command.

Exited VC6 and did a warm reboot.

In Windows Explorer, navigated to a directory with drawings and selected the
"View">"Large Icons". The icons showed the VC logo (triangle & pencil) but
no iconized drawing. It did, however, show some .bmp files that were in the
                      same directory.

Started VC6 then navigated to File>Open and clicked on a drawing file name -
the preview showed in the little window.

Navigated to Tools>Folder Options>View -- Unchecked "Display file icon on
thumbnails" - clicked Apply>OK ---- And!! There's the thumbnail in the
                      Windows Explorer.

                      Hope that helps.

I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                      checked.

box checked and then re-opened. Checking the 'Show Preview' box on exit
is only for that, apparently it has nothing to do with the Windows
directory, at least as far as I can see, now. Anyway, I am not aware
of any other preview capability within VCad. Glad I could help.

                          Contributing to Marc's comments.

I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                          checked.

What OS are you using? It sounds like Vista or Windows 7? We are using XP

I don't see that as an option in windows explorer.

                              Contributing to Marc's comments.

I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                              checked.

What OS are you using? It sounds like Vista or Windows 7? We are using XP
and I don't see the option you are talking about..." Display file icon on

I don't see that as an option in windows explorer.

                                Contributing to Marc's comments.

                                Hope that helps.

for those of you who leave your computers on a long while between
restarts, it may be that you have to re-boot the computer to get the
Open File (view-set=Thumbnails) dialog to show the preview, after you
have checked the 'Show Preview' box on the last file save. Without
rebooting, I just saved a VCad file with S-P checked, and tried opening
Windows Explorer to viewed that directory (view setting=Thumbnails) and
the preview image does _not_ show (this, without reboot). If you feel
like restarting you _may_ find a preview image in your directory, if
this is the preview you are looking for. I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                                checked.

                                  Contributing to Marc's comments.

I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                                  checked.

                                    Hal,

If you're seeing thumbnails for other file types like PDF, JPG, etc., then
the problem is likely to be an issue with the installation of the VCADD
thumbnail viewer. The most common cause is that something has altered the
VCD file association settings. The VCInfo.exe tool from the Files section
can be used to check the association settings.

When the thumbnail viewer is working correctly, a VCD that was saved without
the preview will still show a thumbnail, but it will be an internally
generated bitmap that says "No preview available".

The V6 File Open dialog will first attempt to use the thumbnail view to
display the preview. If that fails, then it will obtain the preview directly
                                    from the file.

There is an issue with the file parsing for Windows XP where it can take a
very long time to obtain the preview for very large folders. Turning off
the preview will alleviate that. The problem will be fixed in the 6.0.1
                                    patch.

                                    Adrian

Got the old gal running again but couldn't bring up VC6 because the last
time I used it, it was still in Beta. VC5 was still in preview mode in the
                                      "Open" dialog.

In XP, go to Windows Explorer, click on View then click Thumbnails you
should then get the drawing previews.

and I don't see the option you are talking about..." Display file icon on

I don't see that as an option in windows explorer.

                                      Contributing to Marc's comments.

I know (in the past, older
computers) this preview setting (S-P checked) tends to slow down the
directory display... if there are a number of VCad files saved with S-P
                                      checked.

                                        Adrian,

We are working in V5 with this problem. We ran the VCInfo.exe and the
"thumbnail" information in the registry seems to be the same as on my
                                        machine and mine works.

We also tried a reboot, but that did not seem to help. We also checked the
file association in the Folder Options and that all seems correct.

                                        Regards,

                                        Hal Roenick

The problem will be fixed in the 6.0.1
                                        patch.

                                        Adrian

Is the viewer DLL (VCThumb.dll) actually present in the Windows System

Unless you've explicitly changed it, it will normally be Windows\System32.

One way to determine the folder's location is to open VCADD's About dialog
and click the "System Info..." button. The System Directory is listed on
                                              the System Summary page.

                                              Adrian

                                                Ed,

It should be in whatever folder is the designated Windows System folder.
Unless you've explicitly changed it, it will normally be Windows\System32.

One way to determine the folder's location is to open VCADD's About dialog
and click the "System Info..." button. The System Directory is listed on
                                                the System Summary page.
