      Thanks for making this patch. Now I wonder what #if statements we
      really need. I would not expect the new variables to be exclusive for
      the ActiveState build. Perhaps it needs something similar to:

      # if (PERL_REVISION == 5) && (PERL_VERSION >= 8)
