Is it possible to highlight unmatched opening brackets? I tried defining two regions like syn region abc start= ( end= %$ syn region def start= ( end= )

Is it possible to highlight unmatched opening brackets?

I tried defining two regions like

      syn region abc start="(" end="\%$"
      syn region def start="(" end=")"

but the second one takes effect even when it does not find the end
      pattern.

In many situations it is beneficial for a region to extend to the end
of the file when no end pattern is found, but is it possible to turn
      this behaviour off?
