thank you for your answer. you were right.
typing :version gave me a list with a bunch of options but the
differences between the users started with the second vim was
      compiled :) :
      [~]# diff rootversion /home/li/version
      2c2
      < VIM - Vi IMproved 7.0 (2006 May 7, compiled May 3 2007 05:10:42)
      ---
      > VIM - Vi IMproved 7.0 (2006 May 7, compiled May 3 2007 05:10:16)
....... many other more relevant differences ......
root was using the "Small version without GUI" and the user was using
      the "Huge version without GUI".

      looking further a saw this:
      [~]# ls -l `which vim`
      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2737356 May 3 12:10 /usr/bin/vim
      and
      [~]# ls -l `which vi`
      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 656468 May 3 12:10 /bin/vi

going back to the regular user he had an alias defined:
      [~]$ which vi
      alias vi='vim'
      /usr/bin/vim

so... everything is clear now (it was so simple!)
thank you guys for your time.

      Liviu
