      1. No escape sequences for changing cursor shape appear in
      urxvt doc of escape sequences. Ask on urxvt mailing list whether
      it has such undocumented sequences.

      2. Did you try 'set showmode' and tip
      http://www.vim.org/tips/tip.php?tip_id=1287
      ? The advantage of this is that it works in any terminal.

        the cursor shape used in the gui apps (a pipe like |), to make vim act
        like gvim. Now after a lot o time using vim with a square-like text
        cursor shape I'm already accustomed, but i think i | is better.

            IIUC, at least some text terminals allow changing the height, but not the
            width, of the cursor. Don't know how to access that property from Vim though,
            except in the Dos/Windows console.
