I do not think you can set an option for this. You could edit the viminfo
file directly. (Search for "# Buffer list".) You could automate this.
the vimrc file (and also plugins) is read before the viminfo file. So you could
add something to your vimrc file, or write a little plugin, that edits the
viminfo file to limit the number of buffers saved. If you want to do this and
need help, let me know. (As Sven Guckes would say, "... need ... sleep ...")
