problem with :make on X terminal

      file and :make it (i have a makefile, of course), i have to press
      return twice. the exact sequence of things is

      :make

      ...
      [48] [49]) [50] )
      Output written on main.dvi (50 pages, 211608 bytes).
      Transcript written on main.log.

      Press RETURN or enter command to continue

      <CR>

      (1 of 22): TEXMF={~/config/texmf,/usr/share/texmf} tex main.tex
      Press RETURN or enter command to continue

      ??? any clues? this doesn't happen in the console or from within
      gvim.

          i just tried with with a humongous rxvt (120x40), the problem is still
          there... if that helps, 'vim --version' gives
