      Emacs kindly treats ".vimrc" files as VimScript. It would be nice if Vim reciprocated, treating ".emacs" files as Lisp code.

      This is helpful when temporarily switching to a different editor to fix configuration, or when editing files on computers where emacs and/or vim are not yet installed.

        It does, at least in Vim 7.4.283. You can see this by searching
        $VIMRUNTIME/filetype.vim for ".emacs" and you can verify it as
        follows.

        $ vim .emacs
        :set ft?
        filetype=lisp
