NTU Hunger Event – 23-24 Mar

Students at NTU are organising an event to call attention to the problem of World Hunger. While the tragedy of 10-20 people dying here or there makes international front-page headlines, the UN estimates that more than a 1000 die daily due to lack of food, unnoticed by most of us.

Diversion of food resources to meat production wastes resources that could feed the 100s of millions of people without enough to eat. VSS calls attention to this in our exhibitions, in particular with our dramatic ‘starving child’ sculpture: http://vegetarian-society.org/?q=WorldHunger

We have been invited to set up a booth and to speak at the following event.

Venue:                              NTU, Student Activities Centre, near School of Biological Sciences , North Spine

      Date:                      23-24 Mar

Time:                      12.00-16.00 on the 23rd and 12.00-20.00 on the 24th

Talk and Forum:      1800-2000hrs on the 24th

           Details:                        Email: pritha.saraf@..., 8374.6406, www.aiesec.org.sg

VSS 10th Anniversary AGM, Sat, 28 Mar, 2-5pm

Sat, 28 Mar, 2pm-5pm, VSS will hold our 10th anniversary AGM at The Giving Place, the HQ of the National Volunteer and Philanthropic Centre, located at 6 Eu Tong Sen Street, #04-88, The Central, just above Clarke Quay MRT on Level 4, in the MPH room.

Light refreshments, including a vegan birthday cake by Halimah, will be served. For directions: http://www.nvpc.org.sg/Pgm/Others/NVPC_F_ContactUs.aspx

Please attend the AGM to celebrate what VSS has done over the past 10 years, to discuss what we will do in 2009 and beyond, and to explore how you might be involved in our urgent task of educating the public about the benefits of moving towards diets that are part of a kinder and wiser way of life.

‘The China Study’ Now Available In Chinese

Previously, this eNewsletter carried excerpts from ‘The China Study’ - http://www.thechinastudy.com - by Prof Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University and Project Director of the China-Oxford-Cornell Diet and Health Project. The study was the culmination of a 20-year partnership between Cornell University , Oxford University and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine.

The New York Times has recognized the study (China-Oxford-Cornell Diet and Health Project) as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” and the “most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease.” The book draws on data from many other sources, not just data collected in China .

The book is now available in Chinese at:

      Earth Hour 2009

WWF's (World Wide Fund for Nature) Earth Hour will take place on 28 Mar at 8.30pm - to encourage organizations, community groups and individuals to switch off their lights for one hour, to highlight the urgency of climate change and that everyone can do their part in their daily lives to reduce their carbon emissions.

The Earth Hour campaign was initiated by WWF Australia two years ago and has since gone global. In 2009, Earth Hour will be the culmination of 1 billion people in more than 1,000 cities around the globe, turning off their lights for one hour in support of the fight against climate change.

      Green Planet Awards Competition

The Green Planet Awards – www.GreenPlanetAwards.org - raises awareness about the critical situation that the environment is currently in and human actions that influence climate change.

There will be a competition with 1500 Euros as the first prize for the student who invites the most friends to the www.Green2Cool.org social networking website and informs them of the eco eating message that is available on the GreenPlanetAwards.org website.

What you eat affects the environment far more than what car you drive! Excessive meat eating damages your health & contributes more to global warming than total worldwide transportation combined! Therefore, the theme for this year’s award is ECO EATING.

The www.GreenPlanetAwards.org/green2cool competition is open only to tertiary students worldwide, but you are welcome to invite non-students to your profile. The competition starts on February 1, 2009 and submissions have to be in by June 30, 2009.
