Our School Show Becomes Stronger, Much Stronger

Last week, VSS did an Assembly Talk at RI for the entire Sec 2 class and many of their teachers. This time the talk had a powerful new feature. In addition to the standard PowerPoint presentation with video and our smoothie demonstration with tasting, the new feature was a weightlifting demonstration by Ang Hwee, the vegetarian weightlifter who has won medals in international competition. The boys were mightily impressed to see a vegetarian (aren’t those guys supposed to be weak) lifting huge weights with seeming ease.

Plus, not only did VSS demo a smoothie – with the demo projected on a big screen so that all the students could see how to make it at home – but two groups of students also made the smoothie, to prove how simple it is to make. (See the next article for info about how to make the smoothie.)

At the close of the VSS presentation, the teacher who was serving as moderator summed things up at the end of the session noted that myths about vegetarianism were put to rest.

If you’d like to arrange such a session for where you study, work, worship, recreate, etc., please contact us. We can’t guarantee Ang Hwee for every session, but you can catch him this coming Saturday night on the Channel 8 Variety Show that begins at 8pm. His segment – a kind of weightlifting competition for shopping prizes – usually comes on about 8.30pm.

      “Vegetables For Health and Healing”

A reader recommends a new book she found at Kinokuniya, but which is also to be found in the collections of the National Library and at Singapore Poly’s library: Vegetables for Health and Healing, by Dr Ong Hean Chooi, a professor at University of Malaya - http://umexpert.um.edu.my/papar_cv.php?id=AAAJxnAAQAAAF9jAAi - published in KL by Utusan Publications & Distributors Sdn. Bhd.

The reader raves, “The book has 2 pages each on about 80 vegetables. Each vegetable has a description of its vernacular & botanical names, origin and planting, what it constitutes, which parts can be eaten and how (frying, curry etc), health & healing for each part – leaves, stem, fruit etc, bioactivities...the pictures are great too. It’s like an easy reading encyclopaedia covering local vegetables – drumstick, angled loofah, roselle...

Keeping a Distance In The Year Of The Ox

This article from Slate briefly discusses the modern path the living, thinking, feeling cows, cousins of the ox, suffer as they are transformed into meat for the blissfully ignorant consumer: http://www.slate.com/id/2206798

Here’s an excerpt from the first paragraph of the article:

In War and Peace, Tolstoy's Prince Andrei describes a woman who swoons at the sight of a calf being slaughtered: "She's so kind, she can't bear the sight of blood, but she eats the same calf in sauce with great appetite." This anecdote is really a metaphor for war, but it works just as neatly for, well, meat. Most of us carnivores are that lady, keeping the steer in the pasture mentally separated from the beef on our forks without too much consideration for how one becomes the other.
