      Buy the Bag

More people, but still not many, are bringing their own shopping bag these days, and many such bags have been designed. Our favourite is the shopping bag designed as a joint project by Kampung Senang & VSS. Besides helping the environment, the bags also raise funds to build a "Classroom of Hope" for children at a Waldorf School in Bangladesh : http://www.waldorf-bd.org/initiative.htm

The bag material is made of locally grown organic cotton and woven using family-style sewing machines by Waldorf School teachers and parents. The school is located in a low-income area. Hence, we are helping them to raise funds in order to allow more children to cultivate a holistic mind and social responsibility and learn to be independent and respect life & the environment despite the challenging environment. These children are also taught the art of organic farming and learn to be self sufficient instead of depending on others or charity aid.

You can purchase the bag at Kampung Senang's Holistic Lifestyle Centre, Blk 106, Aljunied Crescent , #01-205, 6742.6627, email@..., http://www.kg-senang.org.sg. Cost: $3.00 minimum donation. You can also buy organic vegetarian food there to put into your new bag.

Lights Out on 29 Mar (Sat), 8pm-9pm

This year, VSS is joining ECO (Environmental Challenge Organisation) Singapore and other organisations to take part in Earth Hour - http://www.earthhour.org -

29 Mar (Sat), 8pm-9pm, a time when people in many countries will turn off their lights and other electrical equipment. The goal is to take a symbolic and practical action to protect the environment: http://earthhoursingapore.blogspot.com

What can vegetarians do besides turning out the lights for an hour?

      ·         Email your friends about Earth Hour and tell them why eating vegetarian is another good way to save the Earth: http://veg.ca/content/view/133/111

      ·         Try a raw dish as part of your dinner that evening. Less cooking means less energy consumption

      ·         Do a short video of yourself and friends/family with the lights out eating veg food. Upload it to You Tube and send the link to ECO Singapore - http://www.eco-singapore.org/contact - and VSS – info@...

Distance Learning Paper on Animals and Society

"Animals and Society" is a new distance learning paper that will be available through Massey University in New Zealand from July 2008. The course explores relationships between animals and human societies historically and contemporarily. The paper considers ways in which social, political, economic and cultural relationships, institutions and dynamics have shaped and have been shaped by the human - animal configuration. Topics include:

      ·         animals in 'hunter-gatherer' societies

      ·         the domestication of animals

      ·         the impact of the transition to modernity on animals

      ·         farming

      ·         animals in research

      ·         companion animals

      ·         spectacle, sport and entertainment

      ·         animal lore

      ·         animals and film

      ·         conservation

      ·         the animal welfare movement

      ·         animal rights.

Students will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of the extent to which relationships between animals and human societies have changed across time and space, develop an understanding of the significance of non-human animals for human societies, and engage critically with scholarly literature about different dimensions of the animal-human relationship. In 2008 the paper will be available at 100 level. In subsequent years the paper will be available at 200 level. The paper is taught by Associate Professor Peter Beatson, Professor Kevin Stafford, and Dr. Mary Murray. Mary is the course coordinator, and if you would like further information about the paper you can contact her at m.murray@...
