      Volunteering with VSS

From time to time, people ask about volunteering with VSS. Vegetarianism needs many such people. There are too many silent vegetarians.

The obvious question is: What do volunteers do? Maybe the best answers to that excellent question are two other questions: What do you think needs doing to promote vegetarianism? and What do you feel comfortable doing? In other words, we encourage people to define their own niche.

However, we do have certain crucial needs. For example, we need help with fundraising. Asking for money is something that few people enjoy doing, and it’s even tougher with all the negative publicity that some non-profits have received in the past couple years.

If you’re interested in helping with fundraising or anything else, contact info@...   Thx

      Updates from Dresden

Every two years, the International Vegetarian Union (of which VSS is a member) helps to organize a World Vegetarian Congress. This year, the Congress will be held 27 Jul – 2 Aug in Dresden , Germany . At least a few people from Singapore plan to attend. You can view the preliminary programme at http://www.ivu.org/congress/2008/program-english.pdf

On the tour, you will see the new capital and the biggest city of Germany , Berlin , the historic town of Potsdam with its famous architectural and artistic treasures from the days of the Prussian kings, and the Spreewald - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spreewald - one of the most wonderful nature reserves in all of Europe .

To further entice you to come to Dresden , there will be a raffle of three silver V-pendants. All those who have paid their Congress registration fee before 30 Jun will be eligible for the raffle. Save the Planet Petition from Argentina

Our fellow International Vegetarian Union member, the Argentina Vegetarian Union - http://www.uva.org.ar - has started a petition to the UN, entitled Save The Planet - Change Your Diet. Here is the explanation.

According to UN report, Livestock’s Long Shadow -
http://www.virtualcentre.org/en/library/key_pub/longshad/A0701E00.pdf - the livestock industry is the one of the main producers of greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation states that ranching is “the major driver of deforestation worldwide”, and overgrazing is turning a fifth of all pastures and ranges into desert. Pesticides used to grow cattle feed and antibiotics and hormones used to treat cattle get into drinking water and the food supply and endanger human health.

The Argentinean Vegetarian Union (UVA) asks the United Nations and, through the UN, every government in the world to sensitize the world population about the importance of basing our diet on plant foods and to promote a dietary change as a key measure to diminish greenhouse gas emissions.

The UVA calls on every sensitive person interested in preserving life to sign this petition. The collected signatures will be sent to the United Nations.

Join this initiative! Save the future of our planet for future generations.

New Veg Stall at Taman Jurong Shopping Centre

A reader sent along the following:

There is a new vegetarian stall: Ru Yi Vegetarian Food at Yung Sheng Food Court #01-54 Taman Jurong Shopping Centre. Yung Sheng Road, off Ho Ching Road, next to Corporation Road. They sell Chinese veg food in the morning and afternoon, and they fry kway teow, noodles and beehoon in the evening.

Please support them, as they are trying hard to maintain the stall. I like their laksa and lawmee in the morning and rice with vegetables in the afternoon and fried kway teow in the evening.

Please pass around, and thank you - all of you.

World Clock Charts Incidence of Disease

A world clock at http://www.poodwaddle.com/worldclock.swf provides constantly updated info on world population, births, deaths and much more. One memorable feature of the clock is the way it documents the rapid rise of the numbers of sufferers of diet-related diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This is just one more reason that we urgently need to convince people that meat is harmful.
