VSS led a hike there back in 2008, and three years is far too long to stay away from such a great place. So, we're going again. Here are the details. Hope you can make it.
Date: 23 Dec (Fri). Tell your boss that you can only work half day that day.

Bring: Drinking water, snack, rain protection, hat and other sun protection, herbal insect repellent and wear long pants, socks and covered shoes

As 2011 wanes, we pause to reflect on the past year and then make fearless, often unrealistic plans for the year ahead. Any advice for what VSS should strive to do in 2012? In addition to our usual array of activities (see our past annual reports for examples: http://www.vegetarian-society.org/node/1317), we plan to participate in more food fairs, put out a new cookbook (based on Dr Esselstyn's diet) and link with veg orgs elsewhere in Asia.
Please send your advice to VSS at info@.... And, here's some advice we can all try: every Thursday, celebrate Veggie Thursday with a classmate, colleague, friend or family member, whether or not they are already veg. Happy 2012! It's going to be a great year.
Mind Your Body is the health supplement that appears every Thu in The Straits Times. A couple weeks ago, VSS received a letter from a reader of the VSS eNewsletter asking that we respond to a column in Mind Your Body that had, she felt, perhaps disrespected vegetarianism. Below is an excerpt from the reader's letter to us.
There's a write-up by famous chef Ms Sylvia Tan in 'Mind Your Body' (Thu 1 Dec) and she specifically wrote against vegetarian, saying that animal-based food contains perfect proteins while plant-based food generally has incomplete proteins.
It has been a difficult journey for me to convert to full vegetarian and currently I'm still facing strong opposition from my mother when I'm putting my children on a more vegetarian-based diet.
Thus such comments by a famous foodist is not helping those who are in the same position as me, or who are contemplating a switch into this wholesome diet.
Can the Vegetarian Society contact the editor of MYB and volunteer to contribute healthy recipe as well? You can alternate with Sylvia Tan's weekly contribution and provide tips on how plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients. This is a kind of public education that can help to raise awareness about vegetarian and even other alternatives like raw food diet. Famous vegetarians can be invited to share their favourite recipes as well.
Back in 2006, VSS published a recipe book, New Asian Traditions Vegetarian Cookbook which can still be found occasionally in bookstores, as well as at about 19 branches of National Library.
Now, we're planning a new recipe book. We have a tentative agreement to publish the book with Straits Times Press in coordination with Singapore Heart Foundation. The book is designed to be affordable and will feature about 30 recipes, all of which follow the dietary guidelines set by Dr Caldwell B Esselstyn, Jr., who did a series of talks and media appearances here last March, organised by VSS.
You may recall that Dr Esselstyn recommends a very low fat vegan diet, with no added oil and no foods high in oil, such as nuts, seeds and avocadoes: http://www.heartattackproof.com/
We have compiled most of the recipes we need, and now we need a few people to test out the recipes. Here are some of what the testers would check:
1. Each recipe lists
a. Preparation time, such as how long does it take to
chop all the veggies and spices
b. Cooking time, such as how long does it take to fry
c. Are the preparation time and the cooking time more
or less accurate?
2. Are the Steps (a.k.a., instructions) clear?
3. Last but definitely not least, does the dish taste good? Any suggestions for making it taste better? Of course, different people have different tastes, and we'd like to hear your view.
If you can help, write to info@... and we'll send you some recipes to try at home. As this book is an education and fundraising project, VSS cannot pay testers or reimburse for ingredients, etc. Thanks for considering this.
For many people, one of the most useful parts of the VSS website is the part that explains how to donate to VSS http://www.vegetarian-society.org/seeds-of-hope :). Just kidding. Actually, one of the parts of our web we receive the most praise for is the Food Outlets page, which lists more than 500 veg restaurants, stalls, etc. http://www.vegetarian-society.org/?q=fdl
The trouble with such a big list is that it's very difficult to update, with outlets opening, closing, moving, changing their operating hours, etc. It takes all of us newsletter readers and writers working together to manage this huge task.
So, if you notice any changes, please let us know: info@.... But, please do be careful. For example, just because a hawker stall is closed at 3pm in the afternoon does not mean that the stall has gone out of business. Maybe they open early in the morning and close for the day after lunch. Thx for your help.
Recently, someone wrote to VSS asking what our favourite veg restaurant is. Our answer is that we love all veg eateries. From the point of view of the chickens, pigs, cows and our other friends, every veg restaurant in a healthy, happy place, even better if they don't serve eggs and dairy. And, Mother Earth feels the same way.
If you were not very happy with the food at a veg place where you ate recently, why not make a gentle suggestion to one of the staff or the manager/owner?

The BBC reported that a UK research review found that 40% of cancers diagnosed each year - over 130,000 in total - are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things, specifically, not eating enough fruit and veg: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16031149
One of the study's authors stated, "Many people believe cancer is down to fate or 'in the genes' and that it is the luck of the draw whether they get it. Looking at all the evidence, it's clear that around 40% of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change". Please remember this the next time a meat eater tells you that cancer is out of our hands.

Do you believe a humane way to raise animals for meat is possible?
Embar: No. I really don't believe that it is possible to commercially raise animals in a humane way. Any commercial institution has to make economic decisions, to be able to both exist and thrive. I believe that it is impossible to put animals' lives in this equation, without it negatively affecting their quality of life. It is simply impossible to meet the demand for animal products, while treating animals compassionately.
A few years ago I contacted this small Dutch farm where they raise chickens for eggs. This farm allowed you to 'adopt' chickens and to see them on a webcam. I asked them about common issues in the egg industry. A woman, one of the owners of the farm, answered me in an admirable honest way. She told me that they indeed have to dispose of male chicks (which are useless in the egg industry). She also mentioned that when the chickens are about 2 years old, they are slaughtered, because their eggs become too fragile to transport. She mentioned that as long as people demand animal products, they have to make economic decisions like that. And this is of course true for all animal industries, not just the egg industry.
