More and more, research is showing us that animals (including farm animals) posses many of the same characteristics as humans - from having complex emotions to the ability to use tools.

Our next Library talk on Sun, 9 May, 2.30-4.30pm, features Dr Raymond Yuen speaking on ‘Healing Chronic Illnesses through Your Diet’. Dr Yuen’s holds the following credentials - MBBS, M Med (OM), FAMS – and he is Physician in Charge, Hosanna Medical Centre and a Specialist in Occupational Medicine.
Registration is not available. Admission is first-come-first-seated. Health talks tend to be popular.

Among the many recipes available in the VSS cookbook, New Asian Traditions, Vegetarian Cookbook, is a great smoothie recipe with many variations. Unfortunately, these days our cookbook is a bit difficult to find. Two places to try are Kampung Senang’s Holistic Lifestyle Centre and The Whole Earth Restaurant.

From the vegetarian food at the coffee shop along the way, to the supplies that people on the trip generously bought for our four-legged friends, to the pleasant weather, to our hundreds of friends’ enthusiastic welcome, to the questions about when the next trip will be, the trip was an all-around success. Thanks to everyone who went along.

VSS sent the following letter to the ST Forum page, but it wasn’t published.
I REFER to “The pandemic that wasn’t” (April 12). The author contends that WHO’s warnings regarding the danger posed by H1N1 (also known as swine flu) overestimated the threat involved. Regardless of what did happen or will happen with H1N1, it is becoming increasingly clear that we humans’ growing appetite for eating meat from other animals does threaten us with a host of life imperiling illnesses.
The list of these grave diseases linked to meat production includes nipah virus, SARS, mad cow disease, bird flu and swine flu. While much remains to be understood, the rise of these deadly diseases has been associated with the rise in factory farming.
Factory farming is the increasingly common practice of crowding pigs, chickens and other animals together in cramped, unnatural conditions in order to produce meat more economically. Similar practices are also on the rise in regard to marine animals.
As we humans do not need to eat other animals in order to be healthy, why risk outbreaks of killer diseases, such as swine flu? Moving away from meat and towards a diet richer in plant foods might also reduce the incidence of another set of severe illnesses linked to heavy meat consumption, for example, heart disease and diabetes.

Very close to the vegetarian oasis known as Fortune Centre, a Japanese veg restaurant has opened, with some chefs and ingredients from Japan . The eatery’s name is Zen and details can be found at
Our friends at SAVE (Students Against Violation of the Earth) are bringing a distinguished Global Warming expert to speak at NUS on Sat, 15May, 4pm. Professor Tim Flannery was named Australian of the Year in 2007 and is presently a professor at Macquarie University. Till 2007, he was chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council, an international climate change awareness group.
