      If you have friends in the Chicago area, please let them know about our Chicago Green Festival, May 18 & 19. Featuring Greg Palast, Emmanuel Pratt, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., Amy Goodman, Marianne Williamson, John Perkins, and local community leaders.

      May 18 is La Gran Limpieza: The Great LA River CleanUp. Come help Friends of the L.A. River clear out junk that winds up in the river. Volunteers get a free t-shirt and reusable grocery bag, plus, live music, refreshments, and raffle prizes.

      Best known for car chase scenes and drag races, the L.A. River was once home to steelhead trout and grizzly bears. Now it’s time to bring the L.A. River back to life! Join Friends of the L.A. River for La Gran Limpieza: The Great LA River CleanUp, a fun, 3-hour restoration event at 15 river sites in L.A. County. Please wear work clothes, sturdy shoes, long pants, a hat and sun protection. Also handy to bring are grabber arm tools and waders/rubber boots. May 18, 9am - 12 noon. Find location details and more information for individuals and groups online.       In the true spirit of the American Yippie Party, join the Backbone Campaign & the Youth Justice Coalition for two Artful Activism Nonviolent Direct Action Trainings in L.A. Harness the power of community in public spaces with Action Planning, Grand Strategy, and Creative Tactics. Backbone Campaign trainers Kim Marks and Bill Moyer will share how to build giant Overpass Light Brigades to illuminate your issue. 2-Day Workshop: Tuesday May 21 & Wednesday May 22, 10 am- 4 pm.       20th Annual Kid’s Ocean Day, May 16
      Take a stand in the sand! Thursday May 16 is Kid’s Ocean Day, the 20th annual beach clean-up, celebration, and call-to-action for the protection of the world’s oceans. Last year hosted 5,000 Los Angeles kids, teachers and volunteers committed to protecting the ocean from plastic litter that kills marine life and pollutes food resources. 7:30 am-1:30 pm, Dockweiler State Beach, Playa del Rey, 90293.

      NYC Recap
      Recap of NYC Green Festival For a second consecutive year, New York City Green Festival flourished in the tri-state area on Earth Day Weekend. The festival attracted a crowd of more than 20,000 and opened with a jubilant “EARTHALUJAH” from sustainable preacher Reverend Billy and his Earthalujah Choir. Featured speakers included Sara Moulton of Good Morning America and PBS, Frances Moore Lappe, John Perkins, Jim Hightower, and many local luminaries. Green Festival partner FORD Motor Company held their Community Green Grant competition at the Javits Center for five local non-profits to have the chance to win $5,000 towards their cause. This year’s winner was the New York Coalition for Healthy School Lunches. Four runners-up each received $1,000.
