      -=- A Note to Members -=-
This list is NOT moderated, so please keep this in mind as you post your message when you post, it will be sent to hundreds and hundreds of people and be archived on the Yahoo! Groups page of U Street News.

In an effort to control spam and other unwanted messages, and to confirm your intensions are good, your first few post will be moderated - after you post without any issues, you will be set to unmoderated.

Please note that moderated posts are not always approved/posted the same day they are recieved, but are posted as quickly we can get to them (sorry in advance for any inconvenience).

If you do send a spam message or any other inappropriate material to this group, you will be banned immediately without warning.

      -=- List Etiquette -=-
Messages should relate specifically to the Cardozo Shaw / 14th & U Street,NW area or should be of specific interest to the Greater U Street neighborhood. This will help avoid the list being overrun with e-mails about city-wide or national issues and events.

Please sign your posts. Folks like to connect a name with each message. Some people also give an idea of where they live. Thats nice, too.

Try to make your subject line meaningful. Many people only read an e-mail if the subject interests them. If youre writing about the recent rash of flower thefts but your subject line says Re: Handyman you might not reach your target audience.

If you are posting a reply, please only include the parts of the original message that are relevant to your reply. Delete and leave out the extraneous stuff. Your e-mail will be easier to read and take less time to download.

Finally, please keep your messages free of personal attacks and inflammatory language. Those messages are not enjoyed by anyone and they are also a violation of Yahoo's terms of service and are grounds for your removal from this Yahoo! group.

-=- List Etiquette Part 2 - Yahoo! Groups Guidelines -=-
For your use of Yahoo! Groups, some of the key things to remember are:

      1. You may not harass, abuse, threaten, or advocate violence against other members or individuals or groups.

      2. You may not post content that is harmful to minors.

      3. You may not post content that is obscene, otherwise objectionable, or in violation of federal, state, or District of Columbia law.

      4. Stay on topic. Although all groups are different, most groups appreciate it when you stay on topic. If you constantly stray from the topic you may be moderated or removed from a group altogether by its owner.

      5. You may not add members to a group without their permission.

      6. You may not use Yahoo! Groups for commercial or advertising purposes.

      7. You may not post content which infringes the intellectual property, privacy or other rights of third parties.

      8. You may only post adult-oriented content in age-restricted areas. You must be 18 years old or over to access these areas.

      9. Some content may be more appropriate in some contexts than others. Yahoo! reserves the right to remove content that it determines, in its sole discretion, to be inappropriate and in violation of our rules. For example, discussions or depictions of bestiality, incest, excretory acts, or child pornography may be inappropriate if placed in a sexual or otherwise exploitative context.

      10. You may not use Groups solely for the purpose of storing and archiving files.

Yahoo! Groups, (not CSNA) in its sole discretion, may terminate or remove any content, or your Yahoo! ID immediately and without notice if:

      (a) Yahoo! believes that you have acted inconsistently with the spirit or the letter of the Yahoo! Terms of Service or the Yahoo! Groups Guidelines, or

      (b) Yahoo! believes you have violated or tried to violate the rights of others. Please help us keep Yahoo! Groups an enjoyable and positive experience. If you see a Group or content that violates our rules, please let us know by

Read the complete guidelines here: http://groups.yahoo.com/local/guidelines.html

Off-topic, abusive, or messages that violate any of these guidelines will be deleted from the list's archives.

-=- DON'T Use this List for Commercial Advertising -=-
We welcome messages about upcoming special events, personal items they want to sell, like bicycles, comic book collections, firewood, mattresses, etc.

Notices about yard sales or community fund raisers welcomed as well as community days, fund raisers, and the like.

It would be appropriate for someone looking for something to buy, like a home, to send a message to the group, and anyone who knows of a home that is available can send a reply to the group or contact the person privately. This would also hold true for people asking for recommendations for child care, home repair, contractors, etc.

It is NOT okay for one to use the list to advertise their own business or commercial activity.

These messages will be deleted and the author warned repeated posts will result in the author being removed.

At the bottom of each e-mail you receive from this group is a statement that your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to the Yahoo! Terms of Service. One of those terms is that group members agree not to upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, junk mail, spam, chain letters, pyramid schemes, or any other form of solicitation...

Read the complete terms of service here: http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/

We also do this to keep U Street News useful and SPAM free for your reading enjoyment!

-=- How Do You Want to Receive U Street News? -=-
Some of you might prefer to limit the number of e-mails you receive from the group each day. You can receive the list as individual emails, a group of them at once, or even view the messages online http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ustreetnews and not receive any emails.

Digest messages are delivered in batches of 25 emails or daily, whichever comes sooner. This is the best option if you want to receive fewer mail messages and dont need up-to-the minute messages in your in-box.

To change your subscription to follow the directions below:

When you receive an e-mail from someone in the group, the From line in the header of the e-mail will have the address of the person who sent it. The header also contains a Reply-To line. This is where any replies will be addressed. For this group, replies are automatically addressed to U Street News; if you send your reply to this address, EVERYONE in the group will get it.

If you just want to reply to the individual who sent the e-mail, make sure you change the address in the To line of your reply before you send it out.

Taking Advantage of the Features of the Web Site

There are perks that come with being a Yahoo Groups member. Signing up is free and in addition to the benefit of the interesting and informative messages we receive from our neighbors, each group is given a web site. The address for our groups site is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ustreetnews

The site offers a variety of features, including a place to store related files, photos and bookmarks, an archive of old messages, etc Group members can take advantage of the web sites features by signing in with a Yahoo ID.

But, dont forget the REAL online home of CSNA at www.csnadc.org where you can find much, much more information.

-=- Why U Street News Doesnt Accept Attachments -=-
We dont accept attachments for a couple of reasons:

      - To protect members from inadvertently spreading computer viruses to one another. Any attachments to e-mails sent to U Street News will be automatically removed.

      - Not everyone has a fast connection to the internet or Microsoft Word; nothings worse than waiting for a file to download and then not having the correct software to open the file.

The greatest inconvenience will be for folks who forward messages to the list as attachments. If you wish to share something with the group, simply copy the text of the email or document and paste it into the body of your message.

If you have a file to share with the group, you can post it online in the Files section of U Street News: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ustreetnews/files/
