The surplice worn by acolytes and choristers in some of the Western
Churches is in fact a truncated form of the alb. Chanters in the Western
Churches, particularly in monasteries, sometimes wear the cope, which in
that instance answers to the short felonion.
If no short felonion is available for an ordination, some bishops
will use a large aer, or otherwise improvise. I had not previously heard of
      pinning up a normal felonion.
If the candidate has sufficient advance notice, it is pleasant for
him to have a short felonion tailored for the occasion, and then keep it as
      a blessing.
