Mrs Trillings' Mrs Harris
- Movies and TV form a continuum with the News. Kennedy and Reagan were
camera-ready but so are all candidates and all presidents these days.
Does Clinton bite his lip only for close-ups? The dramas of
Shakespeare reside on a continuum with Law and Order. Bush swaggers
like a cowboy. Mrs Trilling wrote much theatre criticism, but she could
not defend herself against the vulgar. All she had was "sensibility."
But her book on Mrs Harris strikes me particularly because she wrote it
when she was 75, because she could not have written it before Capote's
In Cold Blood, and because, although she assembled various collections
of her reviews and articles, it was her only book.
