I tried to send a message this weekend and failed. I sell a service for a long
distance company and am trying to earn a computer for Gertrude. The plans are
3 cents per minute off peak 10 cents peak, 7 cents any time or 10 cents a minute
any time. If you already received a message about this, I am sorry. If you
want more information, e-mail me or visit my web site listed below. It really
is easy, the company (Excel) is the 4th largest behind Sprint and any of the
offers is really a good service depending on your calling habits. I hope
that you will consider it and help us earn a computer.

        Dan, Dan, Dan,

While I respect your ends, I'm not too keen about your means. I
know that ujeni is the forum for a broad spectrum of interests and
information (the latter broadly construed). However, plugging one's own
business enterprises here leaves me a little, well, nauseous (and I've
only recently cleared up my GI track after the Vegas event). I know, I
know, wake up and smell the humus, Ken, this is how the world operates.
Well, I'd prefer not to have this sort of advertisement amongst my happy
little notes from the ujeni list, tossed in with news of AIDS outbreaks,
poverty, and general corruption. Of course, it may be the case that I am
the exception here, and that the majority believes (or more importantly,
mon frer Wise, our illustrious curator) this is OK or is, in the least,
willing to accept it. And, if that is the case, so be it (I'll not flee
the list as certain previous whiners and malcontents have). Now I
don't want to be the resident jerk (although that title may already be
mine), but I thought I'd spout a little.

        Ken

While Rand, our moderator, has already clarified the rules of commerce on
ujeni while I was away from my e-mail this weekend, I'd like to let Dan
know he is not universally condemned. Perhaps it is the slow-wearing
effect of the creeping commercialism on public radio that makes me think
it's OK to announce the existence of a business. I see no problem in
letting a slew of people know that you are selling long distance and that
you would be happy to talk to them if they are interested. Perhaps any
other information should then be reserved for private communication.

However, as commercialism has now been officially banned, I suppose this
              message is moot.
