      DUTIES:
      Incumbent serves as the polio and/or measles technical and scientific liaison between NIP and CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) in developing operational policies and plans for enhanced surveillance for polio, measles, and other vaccine preventable diseases, and for rapid detection of and secondary response to disease outbreaks throughout their assigned country and region. Provides expert consultation and technical assistance and advice to international agencies and organizations such as WHO, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and UNICEF on epidemiology and surveillance of polio, measles, and other vaccine preventable diseases and their control strategies. Negotiates directly with national and local authorities to improve surveillance and recommend resources from NIP in the development and implementation of intensified vaccine safety surveillance activities. Serves as principal advisor to the Branch Chief, Ministry of Health and WHO in the design, presentation, and evaluation of research and epidemiologic studies intended to impact vaccine preventable diseases in the public health community. Collaborates with branch chiefs, Division management staff, WHO and Ministry of Health staff on all matters pertaining to the implementation and measurement of policies to improve surveillance and epidemiology of polio, measles, and other vaccine preventable diseases. Provides assistance in the development, design, and evaluation of operational research and demonstration projects intended to determine the most efficient and cost-effective methods of improving surveillance of polio, measles and other vaccine preventable diseases.

      QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
      Applicants must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the
      United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country. Applicants who received a degree from a foreign medical school, but are licensed to practice medicine in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States require no other certification in regard to the quality of their education. Applicants must also have a current license to practice medicine in the United States. In addition to the above education requirements, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position. SINCE THIS POSITION REQUIRES A M.D. DEGREE, A COPY OF COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED.
