This position serves as an Epidemiologist, assisting the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and several countries Ministry of Health (MOH) officials to plan, implement, and evaluate crosscutting, multi-faceted, multi-dimensional activities for Expanded Programme on Immunizations (EPI) disease surveillance and disease control and eradication initiatives. In fulfillment of these duties, the Epidemiologist visits countries, other national and international agencies, and PAHO regional offices, as required. Provides technical advice and consultation as an internationally recognized expert on critical problems in the field of epidemiology. Provides expert advice and consultation on issues related to polio vaccine use, vaccine-associated paralytic polio, measles control and tetanus prevention, as well as other vaccine-preventable disease related issues. Authoritatively evaluates the data collection, quality control, and data utilization methods used to study an epidemiological problem, including the evaluation of the acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance and vaccine associated polio surveillance system. Participates with scientists and program consultants in various aspects of the study or survey design process. Conducts substantive search, review, and/or analysis of the existing literature and data in a specific area. Prepares and presents summaries that are used for a variety of public health scientific purposes. Oversees public health program or study contracts, grants, or cooperative agreements with full responsibility for carrying out all required monitoring and management duties. Integrates the work of a study group where each member contributes a portion of the analysis, facts, information, proposed actions, or recommendations.
Applicants must meet the basic qualification requirements outlined in OPM Qualification Standards Handbook. Applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree with major study in an academic field relating to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Since this position has a specific education requirement, all applicants must verify completion of this basic education requirement by submitting a copy of an official college transcript with the application. In addition, applicant must have one year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as participation in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of crosscutting, multi-faceted, multi-dimensional activities for EPI disease surveillance and disease control and eradication initiatives.
