      Who wants to go?

      South Africa-Millenium Cape
      Town Plans to Host Enormous
      Millenium Party

      Africa News Service
      02-APR-99

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (PANA, 04/01/99) - Cape Town, South Africa's
tourism Mecca, has announced its plans to host one of the greatest millenium
parties on the planet on the night of 31 December.

Cape Town is being marketed as "City of Life and Light" competing with nine
cities rated among the "top 10 millennium destinations," organisers say.

At a function on Wednesday, Cape Town mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo said the
city planned a six-month programme of arts and cultural events starting in
September as well as a huge New Year's Eve party with a laser and fireworks
      display centred on Table Mountain.

She added that over two million people are expected to attend the December 31
      party in the city centre.

Sheryl Ozinsky, manager of Cape Town Tourism, said the city would be among
the world's top party destinations, adding that even Tibetan spiritual leader the
      Dalai Lama planned to come.

Most of Cape Town's top hotels are already fully booked up for the end of the
year and tourism officials have warned tourists to secure their bookings as soon
      as possible.

Revellers will watch the countdown to midnight on a giant laser-beam clock
projected on to the face of Table Mountain, and a huge Nelson Mandela sundial
will be unveiled which organisers are describing as South Africa's version of the
      Statue of Liberty.

Other plans include a gala banquet at sea, probably on an oil rig, attended by
100 invited international celebrities and a party on the Grand Parade in the city
centre with a variety of music styles, including kwaito, rap, rhythm and blues,
      soul and fusion.

In other developments, the government on Thursday agreed in principle to
declare 31 December and 2 January public holidays to ensure a smooth
      transition to the new millennium.

This would allow for four non-working days for Y2K system testing, in the event
of any problems being experienced with the millenium bug.
