      Malawi-Tanzania Mkapa Endorses
      MULUZI'S Campaign

BLANTYRE, Malawi (PANA, 03/22/99) - Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa
has sent a troupe of artists to boost Malawi president Bakili Muluzi's chances for
re-election in the country's May elections.

"His excellencies Mkapa and Muluzi are brothers so they need to help each other,"
Capt. John Mkumba, a senior member of Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi,
told invited guests to his troupe's first show in Blantyre.

Mkumba's troupe included musicians and acrobats who will be staging a number
of open-air shows to attract people to UDF campaign rallies which kick off on
      Saturday 25 March.

Muluzi needed every support he can get in the wake of his marital problems which
have led to his separation from his wife Anne of 30 years, observers said.

The ruling United Democratic Front itself is being rocked by in-fighting with
different factions fighting over prospective candidates.

Police in the capital Lilongwe are holding five UDF supporters over a free-for-all
fracas which left a number of people injured as rival factions loyal to different
UDF candidates in the city fought over venues of scheduled rallies.
