Health, Law and Human Rights: Exploring the Connections

      An International Cross-Disciplinary Conference

      Honoring Jonathan M. Mann

      September 29 - October 1, 2001

      Sheraton Society Hill Hotel

      Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Health and Human Rights Movement has become a dynamic force in international public health. This three-day, action-oriented conference will use plenary sessions, case studies, and small, interactive workshops to examine key empirical questions about the movement and its conceptual foundations.

Leaders in public health advocacy, research and administration will examine:

      * How law and human rights are related to the publics health

      * How human rights and legal strategies can effectively promote public health

      * How advocates, researchers and policy-makers can use human rights as a framework for addressing structural causes of health and illness

      * Where the health and human rights movement goes in the future

The organizers of the conference are seeking proposals for papers, workshops and other presentations that use field experience, social science, and/or epidemiology to understand whether and how law reform and human rights can make a difference in health. Abstracts can be submitted via the web at <http://www.aslme.org/humanrights2001>www.aslme.org/humanrights2001 or in writing to the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics.
