- HIV/AIDS: Sweden To Donate $1.4 Million For
Education In MalawiSweden announced yesterday it would donate $1.4 million for two programs
aimed at teaching Malawian youth aged 10 to 25 about the need to practice safe
sex to guard against HIV/AIDS.
Fourteen percent of Malawi's population of 9.9 million is infected with HIV or is
suffering with AIDS, according to Swedish International Development Cooperation
Agency spokesperson Anna Runeborg. She added that one-quarter of girls are
forced to quit high school because of pregnancy. "Sexual education is one of the
most important steps in the efforts to reduce the spreading of HIV and AIDS in the
country," she said (Associated Press, 1 Feb).
Earlier reports indicated that of Malawi's HIV-positive population, only 30 have
access to anti-retroviral drug therapy (UN Wire, 1 Nov 2000).
