- Mar 31, 2003I bought the new Theroux book "Dark Star Safari" in South Africa a few months ago. I see it just came out in the US. I'll give it my plug and say I thought it was excellent, in spite of the reviews that seemed turned down by the cynical tone. Perhaps I'm biased since I've been on many of the same roads and trains. You may be highly amused or dismayed (or both) by the Malawi chapters.
I also recommend another book not available in the US (get it on amazon.co.uk) called "The Africa House" by Christina Lamb. Don't let the subtitle turn you off ('the true story of an English gentleman and his African dream'). This is a great account of how a snobby sherry-drinking Brit who builds a big chunk of house in Nowhere, Northern Zambia in the 20s and follows his life thru post-independence. I thought it was a heckuva story.
Also not available in the US-- and if you're willing to wade through a little literary sludge-- I liked Laurens van der Posts' "Venture to the Interior." His descriptions of Mt Mulanje and the Nyika were interesting. But being a frequent flier, my favorite part was his detailed account of what it was like to fly from England to Malawi in 1949.
