The Unified Field theory that Boscovich was dealing with was String theory, and he was dealing with Pythagorean ideas.

It seems that Boscovich was re-introducing Ancient Greek ideas that had been
suppressed by the Christian Church. When earlier to him the Christian
Church was promoting its understanding of Aristotelian Physics, and looking
      upon anything else as heresy.

So, the String Theory comes from Pythagoras.

As per website: http://superstringtheory.com/basics/basic4a.html which calls
itself the Official String Theory website says:

Pythagoras could be called the first known string theorist.
Pythagoras, an excellent lyre player, figured out the first known string
physics -- the harmonic relationship. Pythagoras realized that vibrating
Lyre strings of equal tensions but different lengths would produce
harmonious notes (i.e. middle C and high C) if the ratio of the lengths of
the two strings were a whole number.
