Anna Helvie's business might be only a few months old,
but it's entirely dead … and she hopes it stays that
      way.

Beginning in July, Helvie started running weekly
Haunted History Tours through downtown New Bern. The
hour-long walks begin in Union Point Park and take
participants down East Front, Craven, Pollock and
Broad streets. The tour's 10 stops include landmarks
such as the Stanley House and the Attmore-Oliver House
      Museum.

Along the way, Helvie will entertain guests with tales
of New Bern's dearly undeparted. Featured stories
include "the ship that burns but does not sink" and
the mysterious former residents of the Isaac Taylor
      House.

For Helvie, the idea for the Haunted History Tour came
not from New Bern's past, but from Charleston, S.C.

"They had something similar there and I was very
inspired," she said. "I also think that there is a lot
of interest in the paranormal these days, and that
interest is reflected in the success of television
      shows like 'Medium.'"

"Interest in the paranormal" would appear to be New
Bern's unofficial motto for October. In addition to
the Haunted History Tours, the New Bern Historical
Society will offer its 15th annual Ghost Walk.

"I totally support what they do," she said, adding
that her tours will not be offered the week of the
      Ghost Walk.

Though a nascent enterprise, the Haunted History Tour
is already leaning toward expansion. Helvie is looking
to add a second route as she continues to accumulate
      more local lore.

In the meantime, she will concentrate on publicizing
the tour in its existing form, by offering discounts,
promotions and a little bit of dramatic flair. During
this month, Helvie will lead tours dressed in full
      witch attire.

Haunted History Tours take place regularly Fridays and
Saturdays at dusk, and at other times for larger
groups with advance notice. The cost is $10 for
adults, $8 for children 12 and under and free for
infants. For information or reservations, call 675-8981.
