Complaints from fewer than a dozen Ripon residents led
Mayor Chuck Winn to cancel an appearance by a
self-proclaimed psychic at the local public library,
leading to allegations of religious blackmail and
      censorship.

Winn said he was upholding community standards by
preventing a speech from author Irma Slage, in which
she planned to conduct a séance and channel audience
members’ dead relatives. About 40 people showed up to
the library Sept. 17 hoping to see the speech,
according to news accounts. Slage said some of the
      complaints came from fundamentalist Christians.

“It took away my rights,” Slage said.

The mayor said he got two e-mails and talked to about
six other residents before pushing to cancel the
program, but he was confident that the handful of
opinions represented the sentiment of the community at
      large.

Winn told Natalie Rencher, the director of the
Stockton-San Joaquin County Library, that he would
move to cut the library’s funding if the program
wasn’t canceled and she torpedoed Slage’s event, he
said. He maintains that the potential funding cuts
were not meant as a threat. Rencher did not return
      calls seeking comment.

“She was very agreeable,” Winn said. “There wasn’t any
of this threatening or arguing or whatever.”

Slage said she hasn’t ruled out a lawsuit against the
city and has been approached by several free speech
advocates offering to represent her in mediations with
      the city.
