      Dr. Joe Schwarcz, Director, McGill Office for
      Chemistry and Society

      As one of Canada's foremost educators, Dr.
      Schwarcz has has received numerous awards for
      teaching chemistry and for interpreting science
      for the public. Among these are the Royal Society
      of Canada's McNeil Award and the American Chemical
      Society's Stack-Grady Award. Previous winners of
      the latter have included Isaac Asimov, New York
      Times columnist Walter Sullivan and Don Herbert of
      TV's "Mr. Wizard" fame. Schwarcz is the only
      non-American ever to be honored with this prize.

      Presently he is Director of McGill University's
      Office for Chemistry and Society which is
      dedicated to the dissemination of accurate
      scientific information and the fostering of
      critical thinking. He also teaches chemistry at
      McGill, lectures in McGill's Medical School and is
      well known for his informative and entertaining
      public lectures on topics ranging from the
      chemistry of love to the science of ageing.

      "Dr. Joe" appears regularly on the Canadian
      Discovery Channel and has a weekly radio phone-in
      show as well as a newspaper column entitled "The
      Right Chemistry.". He also writes feature stories
      for the Washington Post on the role of chemistry
      in everyday life. Dr. Schwarcz was the chief
      consultant on the Reader's Digest best-sellers
      "Foods That Harm, Foods That Heal" (1997) and "The
      Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs"
      (1999). His current book "Radar, Hula Hoops and
      Playful Pigs-67 Digestible Commentaries on the
      Chemistry of Everyday Life"" has been on the
      Montreal best-seller list for 15 weeks.

      Dr. Schwarcz lives in Montreal with his wife and
      three daughters and a cat that affords ample
      opportunities for research into the science of
      stain removal.

      Dr. Joseph A Schwarcz is a Professor of Chemistry
      and the Director of the "McGill Office for
      Chemistry and Society" at his alma mater, McGill
      University. His love of chemistry and science has
      led him to a wide variety of projects. He
      initiated an applied chemistry course called "The
      World of Chemistry" which is the highest enrolment
      non-required course at McGill.

      He conceived a unique stage show "The Magic Of
      Chemistry", that blends chemistry, magic, slides
      and music and has educated and entertained more
      than 100,000 people across Canada and the U.S.
      He's got lots of broadcasting experience as well.
      Along with his regular appearances on TVO's Your
      Health, Dr. Schwarcz also appears regularly on
      Montreal radio station CJAD, CBC Radio's Quirks
      and Quarks and on the Discovery Channel.

      Dr. Joe has also contributed to and consulted on a
      number of books including "Foods That Harm,
      FoodsThat Heal" and "The Healing Power of
      Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs." Both are published
