DNA testing would not have existed in 1978 to validate such a claim; so they
would have been unable to prove it by those means. And if they had been able
to prove it ,then they had suddenly found it had become a criminal act. So
no wonder they shut up in 1978.
As to the 2002 case; it begs the question have they done it again or is it
the first time, and if they REALLY have done it are they properly navigating
the legal issues that could make them criminals?
The way that Humans engage in controversial issues like this, it makes a
big mess. Ideally it is a Simple Issue, but Humans go out of their way to
find a way to complicate things.
When Columbus made the controversial move of sailing West, it took hundreds
of years of squabbling to decide what had really happened. (And even today
there are issues associated with Columbus that are a mystery.)
