I was in Tuxpan de Nayarit for the eclipse in 1991 -- the town was roughly
(give or take a few seconds of arc) the location where the eclipse would
be visible at sidereal noon. I talked my way up onto the bell tower on the
city hall, which was the highest point for miles around, save for a nearby
church steeple. This was a fishing village in southwestern Mexico, between
Mazatlan and Tequila, with loads of bird life, iguanas and so forth.

As the eclipse achieved totality, the wind swirled, then died. On the
horizon all around me, from the Pacific Ocean to the west to the mountains
in the distant east, it looked like dawn -- a gold-salmon light glowed, a
ring of fire around the world. It became noticeably cooler as the wind
died, and every sound died with it -- birds, dogs, kids playing in the
street. It was like the end of the world -- darkness at noon, fire on the
horizon and deadly silence in the streets.

So I began to toll the bells.

      Jay, reliving the moment
