MoD accused of UFO cover up
LONDON (Reuters) - The Ministry of Defence (MoD) tried to cover up one of the country's most famous sightings of an Unidentified Flying Object, a parliamentary watchdog said. According to UFO enthusiasts, eye witnesses including U.S. Air Force officers at a military base close to Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, saw a brilliantly lit spaceship land in the forest on two consecutive nights in 1980. The Parliament's Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, ruled the MoD had "withheld three documents relating to reported sightings of unexplained aerial phenomena in 1980 -- the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident". The triangular "strange glowing object" seen near RAF Woodbridge was said to have transmitted blue pulsating light and sent nearby farm animals into a frenzy. The Rendlesham file has been available to the public for some time but only at the discretion of the Ministry of Defence, and until now only around 20 members of the public have seen the file. Sceptics say the witnesses were fooled by the beam from a lighthouse on the nearby coast. Last week, the government pledged to publish the file on the Internet (www.mod.uk), along with other files on reported UFO sightings. So far it has not appeared. The government says it intends to repeal or amend up to 100 pieces of legislation which currently prohibit disclosure of information. It aims to replace them with provisions of a new Freedom of Information Act, passed in 2000.
