      ISSUE NO. 342 - 31 JANUARY 2002

      by the Italian Center for UFO Studies
      (Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici, CISU)

      - New "Flap": It Was Jupiter!

      Dozens alarming reports were received across North and Central Italy during
      the late afternoon of Saturday 26 January, concerning the presence of a
      luminous object near the Moon.

      From 6 p.m. on, numerous residents of Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia
      and Tuscany, bombarded the telephone lines of newspapers and UFO
      associations to report the strange light, which in reality was only the
      planet Jupiter, already shining brilliantly in the southeastern sky for
      some weeks running.

      It isn't the first time that a particularly prominent planet has touched
      off a "flap" of presumed UFO sightings; the last sensational instance was,
      on 23 February 1999, the pairing of Venus and Jupiter.

      [La Stampa, Corriere Della Sera, Il Tirreno and other dailies, 27 January;
      Giornale di Brescia, 28 January; Ufoitalia, 27 January; collaboration by
      Umberto Cordier, Roberto Labanti and Matteo Leone.]
