Night driver switched off lights looking for black hole in space
A New Zealand motorist told police he was driving with his lights off
at night because he was looking for a black hole in space.
Peter Thomas Smith, who's 35, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at
Wellington District Court.
He was disqualified for 15 months and fined 175 for dangerous
driving. He told police he was an amateur astronomer.
Prosecutor Marc May says Smith was driving north between Paraparaumu
and Otaki on September 18 when he switched off his headlights and
crossed to the wrong side of the road.
The court heard Smith told police he was searching for a black hole
and could see better with his headlights off.
Defence lawyer Andrew Davie said Smith had a history of depression and
hadn't been taking his medication, The Dominion reports.
