      * ECONOMIC FORUM, 2-3 Nov 01, Istanbul, Turkey

The Eighth Economic Forum of the Southeastern European Cities and Regions
will be held in Istanbul Nov. 2-3.

The forum is being arranged by the European Local and Regional
Administrations Congress and will be attended by representatives from
member countries' NGOs and business communities. It is being held in order
to provide an incentive for partnership and cooperation between the
various local and regional administrations in Southeastern Europe and will
make a significant contribution to the Congress' Southeastern Europe 2001
      Stability Pact.

One of the important issues to be taken up at the forum will be
encouragement of cross-border and inner-regional cooperation between the
      various local and regional administrations.

The second day of the forum will be open to the press and there will be a
press conference held by Lilbert Cuatrecasas and Istanbul City Mayor Ali

      * PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT, through 25 November 01, Istanbul, Turkey

      The Puzzle of the Gods
      Letoon, Lycia, Turkey

The photography exhibition Xanthos: "The Architecture of a Civilization"
will take place at Galatasaray University

A new exhibition at Galatasaray Lycee will feature photographs of the
ancient settlement of Letoon, close to Lycia. Of the three temples in the
area, the biggest one is dedicated to the goddess Leto, and is being
restored by a French archaeology team.

The sacred space at Letoon is being rearranged, with the restoration of
the main temple receiving the most attention. The initial phase of the
project this year includes the arrangement of the first series of blocks
      on the main part.

The exhibition of photographs of Xanthos and Lycia will continue through
      November 25.

The site is on the world heritage list of Unesco, and research has been
conducted by a French archaeology team for fifty years.

      * CULTURAL STUDIES SYMPOSIUM, 8-10 May 2002, Izmir, TURKEY

      * CALL FOR PAPERS Ege University 7th Cultural Studies

Symposium [Gonul Ertem] (in co-operation with the Cultural Office of the
      U.S. Embassy, BC and ASAT)

      Theme:
Selves at Home, Selves in Exile:
      Stories of Emplacement and Displacement

      Date:
      May 8 - 10, 2002

      Location:
Ege University, Faculty of Letters, Izmir, TURKEY

The global village of 21st century is being formed and reformed through
the rapid advance of transnational capital, technology, people, and
mediatic or cybernetic images. Along with such globalizing processes
flourish representations and discourses of individuality or selfhood that
give rise to alternative expressions of home and exile: janus-faced senses
of attachment/detachment, displacement/emplacement, in (or and?) complex
forms, sites and states. How do our selves respond to a world like this?
How do we configure territorial, spatial, or relational aspects of our
beings, our senses of becoming or belonging? Are contemporary cultural
expressions of emplacement/displacement any different from past
formulations? Is the human experience of home and belonging, being
      absorbed by globalizing cultural practices?

This topic is of particular interest to this conference, which since 1995
has taken place in Izmir, a city which for centuries has accommodated
citizens from other cultures who have experienced similar contradictions
of being and belonging, emplacement and displacement. Communities have
come and gone; and still reside in the city; one only has to think, for
instance of the Levantine and Jewish communities, which settled as a
result of Izmir (or Smyrna)'s status as a trading city.

We hope that this conference will provide an up-do-date perspective on the
topic, with the focus of attention covering both Turkish communities and
their experience of being and belonging, as well as other communities
      around the globe.
