Izmir - Turkish Daily News
The First International Disabled People's Art Festival, arranged by
the Disabled People's Foundation, opened with a ceremony in Izmir's
Cumhuriyet Square early last week. At the ceremony, Izmir Governor
Alaaddin Yuksel said: "While development is taking place within the
country, the needs of disabled people must be considered and
structural facilities made available. The public should consider the
needs of disabled people."
The festival was made possible through the support of VSA Arts and its
120 representatives that are working in conjunction with the U.S.
Kennedy Foundation. Disabled people came from Brazil, Bulgaria,
Belgium, Cuba, Egypt, Germany, Holland, the United States, Spain and
Italy to attend the festival.
Turkey's Disabled People's Confederation Chairman Faruk Oztimur said
"Seven-and-a-half million disabled people live in Turkey. Turkey's
structural problems should be solved to make these people's lives
easier." At the opening ceremony attended by the public, disabled
people danced with their wheelchairs.
The festival will end on Aug. 21.
