The University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased to announce the
reorganization of the administration, financing, and the Board of Editors of
the International Journal of Turkish Studies. Thus far, the Journal has
published six volumes and will resume publication with volume seven in the
near future. New features include: a regular bibliographical survey of the
      relevant literature published in Turkey and elsewhere in the world;
translation of key articles from the non-English speaking world; and
      extensive book reviews, among others.
The growing importance of Turkey as a regional power, the interest in
Ottoman history - most notably its socio-cultural organization - the
changing role of Islam as a political, democratic, and cultural force, and
the recent events in the Balkans, Caucasus, and Central Asia have created a
new interest in the Turkic world. This interest was evident in the wide
spread inquiries concerning the forthcoming issues of the Journal, request
for back copies, and offers of subscription. The reorganization of the
Journal is in part a reaction to these inquiries. The Journal will emphasize
the Republican and Ottoman periods, as well as developments (19th and 20th
centuries) in the Caucasus, Central Asia, Balkans, and Middle East related
to Turkey. As in the past, scholarly quality, originality, objectivity, and
detachment will be the guiding principles of the Journal.
The publishers of the Journal would like to urge all interested
scholars to submit articles for publication as soon as feasible. Summaries
of Ph.D. dissertations dealing with the areas covered by the Journal are
particularly welcome. Dissertations often contain orignal and valuable
information and publishing their findings in the form of summary articles
will make them known, and could open the way for their publication as books.
The current plan is to publish two issues annually and the subscription
rate per year is $36(US) in the USA and Canada and $40 elsewhere. The
publishers regard the Journal as the joint venture of all students of Turkey
and the Turkic speaking lands and ask for your support and contribution.

      Sincerely,
      The Reorganization Committee
      Professor Kemal H. Karpat
      Professor David McDonald
      Robert Zens
