Walmart is where I got my water purification pills
I switched over to Katadyn backpack water filter
system since the pills start to degrade once the
bottle is opened. I still take the pills in my bug
out gear in case I need to treat lots of water.
Also watch stores for sales on coffee filters. My
local ACE hardware store had a sale a few weeks back.
300 coffee filters for $1.
My plan is to put them in a backpack with a bunch of
tape, paracord, etc with a bunch of 1,2,and 3 liter
bottles. Fold the filter over a time or two and
secure in place. Hold them under a source of water to
fill. Should get rid of a lot of big chunks, algae,
etc in the water. Possibly could even get water from
mud if you buried the containers. This water would
then be dumped into my Berkey or other filter system
back in camp.
For home/base camp use I have a Berkey filter. While
it isn't cheap at over $250, it should be good for
around 24,000 gallons with the filter cartridges I
have for it. And Since I found a dozen outdated Berkey
filters (New but the charcoal was leaking out, the
ceramic outer piece was still good) I will have the
ceramic filters useful for another 72,000 gallons or
If money is tight, just get the Berkey filters, 2 five
gallon buckets, two bucket lids, a drill bit (holes
need to be the size of the output end of the filters,
and 2 nuts (also need to fit the output ends)
You can use the above items to make a Berkey type
filter for around $60. Add a few extra filter
units... and you have enough filter capabilities for
48,000 gallons. Enough for a bunch of people for a
I hope this helps,
