Group Description

This is the Troop 209 Anchorage, Alaska. We meet at Christ Our Savior Church Mondays at 7 p.m. in South Anchorage, AK.

Troop 209 is a small troop with two well-functioning, mixed-age and boy-led patrols. Our troop program is balanced and thoughtful and emphasizes scoutcraft, woodcraft, and campcraft. The program is planned by the boys with close adult advising.

In Troop 209, advancement follows naturally from regular participation in meetings and camp outs. Advancement does not drive program. The troop leaders are boys who are well-mentored. Older, rank advanced boys have at least one annual opportunity that is just for them.

Troop 209 engages in regular and “Eagle project” service, particularly in natural resources and in projects that can qualify as “Hornaday Award” service. Troop 209 is committed to serving the international brotherhood of Scouting.

In Troop 209, families hold Scouting as a priority and are committed to their son’s success. A boy’s success comes through regular participation in meetings, activities, and camp outs. Parents are involved in the troop and accompany boys on first hikes and camp outs. (N.B. Parents allow their boys to attend their first Scout camp on their own.) Parents provide adult leadership, as needed, on camp outs. Each parent serves actively on the Troop Committee in a needed position and/or serves as a Merit Badge counselor for a badge required for Eagle Scout.
